IMDSP TC Meeting: ICIP 2000 Vancouver, 11 September 2000 Agenda & Minutes Because of a conflict with the Transactions on IP Editorial meeting, the meeting began early at noon and several of the topics were discussed out of order. The minutes preserve the topic clustering rather than strict chronological sequence. 1) Workshop & Conference Proposals Thrasos Pappas reported on the previous Conference Board Meeting. Brief reports for the next three ICIPs were given by those named: 2001 ICIP Thessalonki: Ioannis Pitas 2002 ICIP Rochester: Murat Telkap 2003 ICIP Barcelona: Philipe Salembier Pitas requested suggestions for plenary talks. Professor Carlo Regazzoni reported that the University of Genoa is considering presenting a proposal for 2004 or 2005. Proposals are encouraged for 2004 and beyond. The future ICASSP schedule is 2001 Salt Lake City 2002 Orlando 2003 Hong Kong 2004 Montreal 2005 Ed Delp reminded the chair (and the TC) that it is a responsibility of the TC Chair to approve the list of technical topics, the Program Chair or Co-chairs, and the list of reviewers for ICIP and that either Program Chair or a Program Cochair must be a TC committee member or former committee member. The TC Chair responsibilities will be added to the bylaws as a reminder. 2) Awards : Phil Chou reported on TC nominations for awards. Nominations for the Society Award, the Technical Achievement Award, and the Service Award were forwarded to the Board of Governors. The TC did not make any nominations for paper awards this year and we need to work harder on putting nominations forth. Correction to minutes from Phil: Actually, we processed the paper awards earlier in the year (in May), under Jelena's supervision. The result was that we nominated Unser's article for the magazine award, and Jelena sent that nomination to the Awards Board at that time. True, we did not send them any nominations for the best paper or young author best paper awards, but we did send them the Unser nomination. Yes, it would be nice to send nominations in all three categories next year. Indeed there was some confusion at first about whether we had submitted any nominations for the paper awards this year. When I sent the society award nominations to Russ Mersereau, he asked me where our paper award nominations were. I told him that we had submitted the Unser nomination in May, and then he acknowledged having receiving it. Apparently the Awards Board processes both the society and paper awards at the same time in September (which was news to me). Our processing of the paper awards is therefore many months ahead of their schedule. Do we want to continue to process paper nominations so far ahead? 3) The TC was reminded that one responsibility is to assist the Transactions Editors in finding Associate Editors. Nominations were solicited for the pool of candidates kept by the Editor-in-Chief. Nominations should have a brief cv and the areas of interest according to the Transactions EDICS. 4) The proposed revised bylaws were discussed. There was general approval with some specific suggestions. A new revision will be forwarded in a subsequent email for discussion prior to a formal email vote. 5) Technical Directions The Society and IEEE push for visionary statements on technical directions was discussed. The age of our own "vision" written many years ago by Amy Reibman was noted. It was decided to form a TC subcommittee on technical directions consisting of the TC Chair and the two previous TC chairs (Gray, Delp, Telkap) to rewrite the existing material for circulation and discussion. 6) The conflict with the Editorial Committee should be avoidable in the future. Usually our TC meets the second day (Tuesday this time) and the ICIP-to-ICIP (which strongly overlapped our TC) meets the last day (Wednesday). But Pitas had to leave on Wednesday, so they were moved to Tuesday, which led to my scheduling to avoid conflict with them. ------------ Attendance Aizawa Apostolopoulos Bouman Bovik * Chou Delp Dubois Kalker Konrad Lagendijk Maitre Mitra Manjunath Moulin * Ortega Pappas Pitas Rabbani Ramchandran Reibman Safranek Salembier Yagel Zerubia * (* = left early for Transactions meeting) Guests: Carlo Regazzoni Univ of Genoa Prof. Kotropoulos (Thessalonoki)
