Industry DSP Committee

The Industry Digital Signal Processing Technology (IDSP) Standing Committee was formed in 1999 to promote industry participation in the SP Society and ICASSP, in particular.  It was officially recognized as a standing committee of the Conference Board of the SP Society in May 2002. The SP Society bylaws state that the “Industry DSP Technology Standing Committee shall in every way function like a technical committee; its chair shall serve ex-officio, with vote on the Technical Directions Board.”  The IDSP SC has organized the Industry Technology Track (ITT) at ICASSP since 1999.  Fields of interest span those covered by the Technical Committees of the SP Society but special emphasis is placed on practical industry applications of signal processing.  Please see the ITT EDICS for specific areas of interest which cover 10 broad categories and 36 subcategories.

The IDSP SC is organized similarly to a technical committee.  Committee members are elected from SP Society membership in industry, government, or academia (with strong industry involvement).  The Chair and Secretary (Vice Chair) are elected from among the membership for one year terms.  Currently, Michael Deisher (Intel) is Chair and Sohail Dianat (RIT) is Secretary.  At this time, there are 24 active members, including 18 from industry and 6 from academia.  Although most members are from the US, nominations are being actively sought from the other geographies.  Member responsibilities include reviewing for conferences (including ICASSP ITT and SAFE), promoting activities in the Signal Processing Society related to industry, promoting papers with strong industrial application content and nominating them for awards, and organizing special sessions and workshops on industrial DSP technology.

The IDSP SC recently organized the Industry Technology Track at ICASSP 2008 in Las Vegas and the SAFE 2007 Workshop on Signal Processing Applications for Public Security and Forensics in Washington, D.C.  There were 99 papers submitted to ICASSP ITT for 2008.  The Industry Technology Track consisted of 3 poster and 3 lecture sessions.  In addition, IDSP SC members organized the ICASSP special session SS-10:  Industry Perspectives on Multimedia for Mobile Phones.  Since its inception, the IDSP SC has organized two special industry-related issues of the Signal Processing Magazine.

If you would like to get involved in the work of the Industry DSP Technology Standing Committee, want to contribute ideas, suggestions, or would like to learn more about it, please contact Michael Deisher <Michael dot Deisher AT Intel dot com>.
