WGI9 - Modern Protection System for Static Var Compensators 09PES_logo_in_color_with_fade_R.jpg
Description: The control and protection system plays an essential role in the overall performance of Static Var Compensator (SVC) applications to enhance the reliability of transmission systems.  SVC systems are custom designed according to one of several topologies intended for specific applications. An extensive protection system is ultimately intended to make use of the maximum operational limits of the equipment. Modern protection systems are increasingly fully integrated with the development of communication protocol and multifunctional IEDs. The Working Group shall investigate design and recommend modern practices for transmission Static Var Compensator (SVC) protection to enhance reliable operation of SVCs.

Documents
Draft Guide for Protecting Transmission Static Var Compensators
This document shall assist users to understand the functional requirements for implementing a protection system for transmission Static Var Compensators (SVC).
The document:
  • Analyzes different fault cases and protection principles applicable to SVCs, including a devoted Annex
  • Presents recent developments in protection systems for SVCs with associated communication systems
  • Provides guidelines on which protective functions are needed to increase reliability, security and maintainability
  • Guides simulator testing of SVC interaction with the power system to verify the SVC will remain operational when subjected to disturbances
Access to IEEE Standards required for referencing in the guide is provided to WG members via the IEEE-SA Mentor eTool. An IEEE-SA account (free) is required along with requesting association to WG I9.
