Student Ethics Competition

The Student Ethics Competition (SEC) is jointly sponsored by Region 5 IEEE and the IEEE Ethics and Member Conduct Committee.  It encourages the study and awareness of professional ethics.  The competition includes a presentation and defense of a case analysis by student teams using the IEEE Code of Ethics.

 The Student Ethics Competition is open to undergraduate or graduate IEEE student members who are registered for the conference.  Each team will consist of two students; one-person teams are not permitted.  Space is limited so that competition registration will close when the available space is filled.  The first team to register from each student branch will have priority unless otherwise designated by the branch counselor. Other teams from the same student branch will be allowed as space permits.

 Date:

Friday Afternoon, April 18, 2008 

Location:

Flarsheim Hall, Room 460 and 560L, UMKC

    Transportation from the conference site may be requested on the registration form

    (See R5 Conference Registration desk for any directions and parking instructions; the UMKC

     campus is several blocks from the conference site)

Time:

Orientation 1:00 pm, 

   Team Preparation (no outside resources allowed, computer provided) 1:15 pm to 3:15 pm

   Oral Presentations (8 to 12-minute powerpoint with 5-minute for Q&A)  3:45 pm to 5:45 pm

 Case for Analysis:

Case is provided to the teams at the orientation.  It is supplied by the IEEE Ethics and Member Conduct Committee.

 Eligibility and Cost:

IEEE student members (undergraduate or graduate) who are registered for the R5 Conference. (Student participants must have a current or pending IEEE membership.  There is no additional competition costs beyond student conference registration and IEEE membership.  Team substitutions are at the discretion of the Contest Chair.)

 Awards:

Announced at the Saturday Conference Banquet.  Certificates are award to the winning team members. Cash prizes are $400 for the student branch of the first place team and $200 for the student branch of the second place team.  The branch may distribute the money to the winning team or use the money for branch activities.

 COMPETITION REGISTRATION:

E-mail SEC Form to steve.e.watkins@ieee.org by Friday April 4, 2008.  Forms will only be accepted for students registered for the R5 Conference.
