ISEI 2008
Vancouver, 8-11 June 2008

Short Courses Program

A new slate of short courses will be offered for the first time at ISEI 2008. The full day courses will take place on Sunday, June 8. Short Course tuitions are not included in the registration fee.

The following short courses are to be offered:

  • SC1: Preventing Power Cable Failures by Hary Orton
  • SC2: Introduction to UL 1446 by Nancy Frost Canceled
  • SC3: Partial Discharge Testing by Greg Stone
  • SC4: Transformer Insulation by Roger Wicks Canceled

See below for full details.

SC1: Preventing Power Cable Failures
Instructor: Harry Orton, Orton Consulting Engineers

High reliability of underground power cables is important as cable failures have a drastic effect on the economy as well as client satisfaction. Improved reliability by understanding why cables fail is important for every power cable user. This short course will examine the many reasons why high voltage and medium voltage power cables fail. Prevention of cable failures and improvement of reliability will be the main focus of the 6 hour program. Some previous understanding of power cable technology would be beneficial. The seminar will focus on the following topics:

  • Manufacture and Design
  • Installation and Operation
  • Material aging
  • Testing and Diagnostics
  • Replacement Criterion
  • Rejuvenation
  • Reliability and Condition Assessment
  • Forensic Investigations

SC2: Introduction to UL 1446
Instructor:
Nancy Frost, Von Roll USA

UL 1446 is one of the important test standards for the thermal classification of insulating systems used in power equipment. This course will make suppliers and users of electrical insulation aware of the test protocol and what happens if some changes to the insulation system are made. The topics in this 6 hour course will include:

  • What is UL 1446
  • What is an electrical insulation system (EIS)
  • Impact of changes to an EIS, and the sealed tube test
  • Use of the UL website
  • Different UL listings

SC 3: Partial Discharge Testing
Instructor:
Greg Stone, Iris Power

Partial discharge testing is routinely used as a factory test to assure users that high voltage equipment such as cables, transformers rotating machines and switchgear have been properly designed and manufactured. Increasingly, PD testing is now being used in the field to evaluate the condition of the electrical insulation in operating equipment. This 6 hour course will provide an introduction to factory and on-site PD testing of high voltage apparatus. Topics will include:

  • Physics of PD (ABC model)
  • Electrical, optical and acoustic detection
  • Electrical measurement quantities
  • Narrow, wide and ultrawide band electrical detection
  • IEC 60270 and ASTM D1868 PD test standards
  • IEC 60034-27 and IEEE 1434 standards for machines

SC4: Transformer Insulation has been Canceled

This has been Canceled, sorry!
