NEW ATTENDEES ORIENTATION SESSIONSunday 25 July 3:00PM and 4:00PM -MCC - L100A, Lower Level A short orientation session will familiarize first-time attendees with PES General Meetings. The session will be offered twice. Each session will provide an understanding of the various types of technical sessions, committee meetings, tutorials, technical tours, and social events. At the end of the session, the newcomer should be able to navigate confidently through the General Meeting and obtain maximum value from the experience. PES MEMBERS MEETINGMonday 26 July 8:00-9:00 AM MCC - Main Auditorium, Level 1 PES President Alan Rotz will provide an update about PES progress and activities of the past year. The three candidates for the IEEE office of Division VII-Elect will each make a short presentation of their individual views and goals so you can make an informed decision when you vote during this year’s IEEE elections... (Meet the candidates at a reception that will be co-located with the Monday Night Poster Session in Hall A of the convention center, 5:00-7:00 PM Monday 26 July.) President Alan Rotz will moderate the Plenary
Session which begins immediately following the PES Members Meeting. Four notable
keynote speakers will address the conference theme Scheduled to speak are Ken Rose from the Institute of Public Utilities (The Big Picture View from the Dismal Science); Jerry Jackson from Texas A&M University and Jackson Associates (What Economics Really Tells Us about our Energy Future); Steve Caldwell from Pew Center for Global Climate Change (Electricity Demand in a Low-Carbon Energy Future); and Giuliano Monizza from ABB Europe (Enabling the Future Sustainable Energy System). COMMITTEE MEETINGSMost administrative and technical committee meetings are scheduled for Monday 11:00 AM (following the Plenary Session) through Thursday afternoon. Some additional committee meetings are scheduled on Saturday and Sunday, 25 and 26 July. See the table of contents for the Committee Meeting section of the program for details. Updates to this program will be posted in the Registration area at the Convention Center (Section 200 Foyer, Level 2) and in the Hilton on the Ballroom level (Third Floor). TECHNICAL SESSIONS AND OTHER TECHNICAL EVENTSPlease see the table of contents to locate a complete listing of all technical sessions. Descriptions include an abstract of each event and papers presented during each session. Updates to this program will be posted in the Registration area at the Convention Center (Section 200 Foyer, Level 2) and on the Ballroom level at the Hilton (Third Floor). Technical meetings are planned for Monday afternoon and evening and all day Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The following types of sessions are scheduled. Super Sessions: a series of presentations in composite sessions designed to fully explore topics from different perspectives. Experts from several PES technical committees will address subjects that are of significant interest to the profession: · SMART Grid Technology Integration · Integration of Plug-in Hybrid and Electric Vehicles: International Experience · Power System Analytics that Empower the Smart Grid · Deploying Intelligence to the Smart Grid · Optimal Methods for DG Integration · Flexible Distribution Network Planning to Accommodate DG Integrations · T&D Impacts from High Penetration of PV Solar Panel Sessions: Invited papers on a wide variety of noteworthy subjects. Paper Sessions: Presentation of high quality papers on many issues of significance to energy and power professionals. Paper Forums: Multiple authors present brief overviews of their quality papers followed by time for a discussion with the individual author(s) of your choice. Poster
Session: A Monday evening special event with hundreds of authors Tutorials: The Power & Energy Education Committee will present five full-day and one half-day tutorials during the meeting. Additionally, the PES Plain Talk program will present one full-day and two half-day tutorials, Classes are taught by eminent professionals in the field. Earn PDHs and CEUs for your attendance (see table of contents to find explanation of PDH’s and CEUs). Full or one-day conference registration plus an additional fee is required in order to attend any of these courses. For complete information about the tutorials, see the table of contents. Inquire at the registration desk for tickets for any of the tutorials. Technical Tours: four half-day inspection trips are offered, plus a combined half-day technical and social tour. Advance registration only. No onsite technical tour registration is available except for the Historic Minnehaha Steamboat-Lake Minnetonka Cruise combined technical/social tour. Valid photo ID must be presented at the beginning of each tour. See the table of contents to locate descriptions and details of each tour. MONDAY NIGHT POSTER SESSION, RECEPTION and STUDENT POSTER CONTESTMonday, 26 July 5:00-7:00PM MCC – Exhibit Hall A, Lower Level A popular feature of the PES General Meeting technical program is the Poster Session, where papers from each represented committee and all topics will be presented. The Student Poster Contest will be co-located with the Poster Session. A complimentary light supper buffet will be served and cash bar will be available. Attendee or Companion badges are required for entrance to the Poster Session; Photo ID will be required to purchase alcoholic beverages at the bar. STUDENT PROGRAMAn exciting student program for IEEE PES Student Members, includes the Student/ Industry/Faculty luncheon and Job Fair, and a Poster Contest. Student members are invited to participate in all other aspects of the General Meeting as well. Students must have registered for the meeting prior to registering for the student program for which there is no additional charge. Students must be prepared to verify their status by providing their ID and IEEE Membership number when requested. STUDENT / INDUSTRY / FACULTY LUNCHEON AND JOB FAIRWednesday 28 July 11:45-3:00PM Hilton – Ballroom, Third Floor US$20 Student/ /Industry/Faculty Luncheon: Attend a luncheon designed to bring together students, industry representatives and faculty advisors. The winner of the Student Prize Paper Award in Honor of T. Burke Hayes and the winners of the Student Poster Contest will be honored. All meeting registrants are invited to purchase tickets and join the luncheon as long as there are seats remaining. Seating is limited. Please check with the registration desk for details and for seating availability. International Job Fair for Students: Luncheon attendance enables employers and university graduates and undergraduates to participate in an International Job Fair for Students. This job fair will provide a forum for employers and students who share a common interest in the power and energy industry to meet and discuss career opportunities. It enables one-to-one conversations between company engineers or recruitment professionals and students who will soon be in the job market. Students will sit with a potential employer during lunch. After lunch, students may circulate among recruiting tables for further conversations. Attendance at the job fair is limited to those holding tickets for the luncheon. NETWORKING RECEPTION Hosted by PES and IEEE WIEWednesday July 28 5:00 – 6:30PM Hilton –Directors Row 1, Third Floor All registered attendees are invited to this complimentary informal reception held to encourage networking between industry, government and university participants. Hosted by PES and IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Committee. Light refreshments will be provided. At 5:30PM a 15 minute program will begin. GRADUATES OF THE LAST DECADE (GOLD) - SEMINAR AND RECEPTIONWednesday July 28 5:30 – 7:00PM Hilton – Duluth, Third Floor The Graduates of the Last Decade reception and seminar provides an opportunity for all conference attendees, in particular, current students and engineers that have graduated within the last ten years to network, meet executives of IEEE PES, and to make contacts among their peers in the Power & Energy community. Find out how you can contribute to PES and how it can help you. All registered attendees are invited. Light refreshments will be provided. A 20 minute seminar will begin at 6:00PM.
