20. June 2011:
Guided tour through Trondheim
Explore
the city of Trondheim from the pedestrian's perspective on a guided
walking tour of Trondheim.
Your walking tour begins at the Market Square, in the middle of the town
center. On the way to the Royal Residence, Stiftsgården, you will see
the statue of King Olav Tryggvason, who founded the city. Stiftsgården
is the largest timber Manor in Scandinavia. Thereafter you walk towards
Nidaros Cathedral, the largest cathedral in Scandinavia. You’ll pass
several interesting buildings; the Church of Our Lady, the remains of
the St. Olavs Church, the Cathedral School, City Hall etc. Walk past the
Cathedral to the Archbishop`s Palace, which also dates back to the
Middle Ages. You will then stroll through the park leading to the
Nidelva River, and cross over the Old City Bridge, painted in bright
red, leading you to a part of the city called Bakklandet. This part of
town once accommodated the poor working class, with picturesque wooden
houses painted in vivid colors. Plenty small cafés and shops for those
who want to spend some time there after lunch.
Passing the first bicycle-lift in the world (steep hill) we will visit
the Kristiansten Fortress to have a simple lunch.
This fortress was
build at the end of 17th century to protect the city from the
Swedes. There is a wonderful view over the city from the fortress, and
it is possible to enter the fortress for those who want to.
The tour takes about 2.5 hours, excluding lunch.
