ANALOG DESIGN FOR PORTABLE SENSOR SYSTEMS

Tutorial Description:

Circuit design for portable sensor applications can be extremely challenging given the complicated relationships between power, noise, gain, bandwidth, and dynamic range. To manage this unruly set of variables it is often helpful to take a systems approach and design the signal path from sensor all the way to digitized output. Understanding the impact of system trade-offs at the circuit level will lead to more robust and power efficient designs that are optimized for a particular application space. The goal of this tutorial is to provide a useful introduction to circuits, design methods, and analysis techniques that enable the designer to integrate system requirements into the analog design process for portable sensor systems.

The tutorial will cover a variety of topics related to analog design for sensor systems:
  • Sensors and Signals
  • Interface Circuits and Methods
  • Power, Noise, Bandwidth and Dynamic Range
  • Continuous Time and Sampled Data Systems
  • Low Noise Signal Acquisition
  • Data Converter Technologies and Applications
  • Smart Sensor Systems
As an example of the systems approach to design a capacitive sensing system will be developed from requirements through circuit architecture. Budgets for noise and power will be established and circuit trade-offs examined. The benefits of continuous time vs. sampled data will be explored and several data converter architectures compared.
