Microprocessor-based digital protective relays revolutionized power system protection with their introduction in the early 1980â??s.? The primary advantages of digital relays compared to electromechanical and solid state analog designs include performance, initial and lifetime ownership cost, size, and reliability.? This presentation highlights microprocessor-based motor protection relays.? The discussion will include thermal overload modeling during motor acceleration and running modes, overcurrent and other abnormal operation protection considerations, motor starting and running metrics, oscillographic event data, and sequential event records.
