Science Fair Judges Needed

by @ 3:09 pm. Filed under ALL

Science Fair Judges Needed

Science Fair season is coming up. Traditionally, the IEEE has provided both prizes and judges for local fairs and we need your help once again. These fairs provide an opportunity for students from middle schools and high schools to show their projects and hear comments from professionals like you. Projects range from the simple to the sophisticated, but behind every project is a student who is anxious to find out what you think about it. As a judge you will interact with students and help them understand what they did right and how they could do better next time.

This year we will be supporting three science fairs: San Mateo (Monday, February 29), Santa Cruz (Saturday, March 12), and Santa Clara (Thursday, March 17). Generally, the judging starts about 10:00 AM and lasts until about 4:00 PM (however, the San Mateo Fair is judged in the evening). Even if you can only stay a few hours your help will still be greatly appreciated by the students. No previous experience or specialized knowledge is necessary only patience and common sense.

If you are interested in helping out at one of these fairs, or sponsor a prize, please call Charlie Neuhauser at (408) 245-0085 (W) or E-mail him at Cneuhauser@Earthlink.net. You can find out more about the fairs at the following sites:

MEAD Education organizes public discussions, case studies and lectures by reputable experts on the “Challenges of the 21st Century”MEAD Education organizes advanced engineering courses taught by leading design engineers and researchers from both high-technology companies and universities. These lecturers specialize in the area of the course, and also have substantial teaching experience. The inclusion of both academic and industrial instructors allows the coverage of the theoretical as well as practical aspects of every topic in all courses.
UCSCmead1
Three courses will be organized by MEAD Education at UC Santa Cruz from March 21-25, 2016 and will be:
* Continuous-Time Delta-Sigma Design
* Ultra-Low-Power RF Circuits for IoT
* Power Management
Each MEAD course focuses on the state of the art in a topic of current interest to industry, and covers all its relevant aspects in an intensive manner. The material is updated every time the course is offered, to keep it current. The particularly intensive format of the course allows a complete coverage of subjects in a relatively short time. Bringing Big Data and Genomics to Unlock Cures for Rare Disease

by @ 2:48 pm. Filed under ALL, BioEngineering

Too many children die each year from difficult-to-treat cancers. The rarity of specific cancers, high cost of drug testing, and limited access to trials have impeded the development of cures. UCSCgenomicsToday, the plunging cost of genome sequencing, combined with new initiatives to pool genomics data, the application of big-data analytic methods and global collaboration between researchers and physicians promises a profound revolution in the treatment of childhood – and many other – cancers.

Get involved by attending the UC Santa Cruz Live in Silicon Valley inaugural event, Bringing Big Data and Genomics to Unlock Cures for Rare Disease on Tuesday, February 2 at the Stanford Faculty Club, 439 Lagunita Drive, Stanford, beginning at 6 pm.
