Technology is now embedded in every aspect of life in the 21st century, and semiconductor chips are the engine powering the ~$5 trillion high-tech industry.? Disruptive transitions such as the advent of nanotechnology and the rise of the global consumer are reshaping the industry.? Companies now face a very different and vast landscape, and need an incredibly sharp antenna for â??killer ideas??? that likely will be inter-disciplinary and â??non-linear??? â?? hidden from usual channels.? ? The current economic downturn makes the search for new growth opportunities even more critical and yet, imposes strict constraints on the resources available for this search. No single company â?? however large â?? can cover this landscape alone, and a fresh approach to research and innovation is needed.? Leveraging external sources will be crucial: universities offer the richest external source of the most futuristic and â??zany??? ideas, and a crucible for testing these at relatively low risk and low cost.? The semiconductor industry has evolved a new and innovative model of industry-university interaction â?? inter-disciplinary, university-based, virtual centers.? This model creates a win-win situation for both companies and universities, if it is understood and executed well.? We describe here how the model works and how we must â??innovate the way we innovate??? for success in the 21st Century. The work is co-authored by George Scalise, President, Semiconductor Industry Association.
