ABSTRACT: If you are willing to bet $20 of your money against $1 of mine that your measurements are accurate within +/- XX% (you pick the XX%) then you understand the uncertainty of your experiment. If you are not willing to make that bet, you should take this course.
We will look at the sources and types of experimental errors and how the uncertainty in the measurements propagate through your data reduction program and affect your result. The first tool we use is common sense: donâ??t sweat the small stuff. The next tool we use is the spreadsheet, for calculating the result from data. Using a simple perturbation technique, your data reduction spreadsheet becomes its own uncertainty analysis tool. With such a simple method for estimating uncertainty, it is easy to â??preview??? the uncertainty of a proposed test, before you run it, and see if it would be worth running. Bring your laptop, build a sample uncertainty program, check it out, and take it home with you.
