The decade of frequencies centered around a terahertz represents the â??last??? frontier for electronics.? Compelling applications have been known for decades, but no generally suitable technologies yet exist.? The problem is that the terahertz band lies in a â??no-manâ??s land??? where neither conventional electronics nor optical devices function well.? Optical sources that depend on maintenance of a population inversion require a small kT, precluding efficient room-temperature operation.? Scaled FETs will eventually deliver sufficient ft, but output powers will be too low for many applications.
Devices based on direct manipulation of electron trajectories in free space potentially offer revolutionary advantages.? Because most practicing engineers are unfamiliar with vacuum-tube principles, this talk combines a tutorial on both conventional and velocity-modulated vacuum devices (such as the klystron and magnetron) with a discussion of terahertz applications.? The talk concludes with a description of a micromachined terahertz platform whose heart is inspired by the century-old Barkhausen-Kurz tube.? Built in silicon technology, the micromachined device permits integration with ordinary CMOS, enabling complete terahertz SOCs, such as cameras, spectrometers, and a host of medical and security devices.
