Carbon nano-tubes (CNTs) are often embedded into low-modulus media (matrices), when employed in thermal management devices (TMDs) as thermal interface materials (TIMs), if there is an intent to increase the thermal conductivity of the nano-composites in advanced nano-technology based TIM (thermal interface materials) designs.? Such composites are typically fabricated at elevated temperatures and operated and tested at low temperatures.? It is imperative that the compressed low-expansion and high-modulus CNTs remain elastically stable, i.e., do not buckle as a result of their thermal contraction mismatch with the high-expansion and low-modulus embedding medium.? We have developed physically meaningful and easy-to-use predictive models that enable one to establish the conditions of the thermo-elastic stability of CNTs.? Dr Suhir will discuss the models and the applicability of the models to CNT design.
