Lithium ion batteries are the only secondary cells in large-scale production which offer ecofriendly chemistries.? However, the storage capacity of Li+ cells has been doubling at a very slow rate over the last 2 decades.? With new application opportunities in both future portable electronics and power hungry electric vehicles, Li+ cells must make more rapid capacity improvements to meet user demands, or face replacement by new, higher capacity technologies.
Dr. Yimin Zhu explains how, through the use of process-ready silicon composite additives, cell capacity can be increased as much as 40% in a single cost-effective step.
