Regardless of how often vendors have used phrases like “buy to own”, you probably don’t own any e-book, game, movie, or song that you have ever downloaded. Copyright law is focused on the ownership rights of copyright holders, but there is no law to define and defend the ownership rights of consumers who buy downloadable instances of those copyrighted works. Moreover, it is unlikely that such law can be created until there first exists a form for downloaded products that is consistent with the consumer notions of both copyright and personal ownership. The P1817Standard for Consumer-ownable Digital Personal Property is defining that form.
Distributing content as plain files tends to destroy its commercial value by making it indistinguishable from a public good. Meanwhile, digital rights management (DRM)? places restrictions on private behavior and personal usage, which is quite reasonable for rental and other licensed services but is the antithesis of personal property ownership. This talk introduces methods by which technology interacts harmoniously with social dynamics to balance the rights of both suppliers and consumers, eliminating stranger sharing without restricting consumer behavior.
