The electronics industry has witnessed a dramatic shift to serial interfaces in recent years. Parallel ATA is transformed into Serial ATA (SATA), traditional SCSI has given way to SAS (serial attached SCSI), PCI is being superceded with PCI Express. Similarly over the years, Flash requirements in the embedded space have evolved – from Parallel NOR to Serial NOR interface. The primary serial interface of choice used in serial flash is the SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface). The use of these serial flash devices in consumer electronics has proliferated. Today, as embedded applications become increasingly complex, the flash density requirements have grown as well. System designers are increasingly looking for choices when selecting higher flash memory densities to store their code and/or applications. In this talk, we will begin with a discussion on market trends and explore the evolution of serial flash from single-input single-output to multi-in, multi-out.
