The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) in partnership with the European Southern Observatory and the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan is presently building the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) in the Andes Mountains above the Atacama Desert in northern Chile.? This is the largest earth-based astronomical project in the world.
ALMA operates from 30 â?? 950 GHz.? These are frequencies of particular interest as astronomers attempt to answer many of todayâ??s biggest astronomical questions.? By observing millimeter waves, astronomers are able to accurately measure radiation coming from cooler objects in the universe.? The measurements made over the relatively wide bandwidth allow us to understand the stochiometry of the universe.? It is a combination of very high precision microwave technologies and very high-speed computing technologies that enable the science that is ALMA.
In this presentation, an overview of some of the technologies employed at ALMA that enable this interesting work will be presented.
