In 2005 the Department of Energy announced upcoming legislation: â??Energy Policy Act 2005???, where for the first time a minimum efficiency for transformers was implemented.? As of January 1, 2007, EPAct 2005 Legislation went into effect.? The purpose of the legislation was to rid the market of worst offenders and establish a â??minimum??? base efficiency for transformers.? This base line efficiency is classified as TP-1.? Prior to this legislation there were no efficiency requirements for transformers.? Studies done by the DOE estimate that existing operating losses for low voltage transformers in the U.S. represent 60-80 billion kWH annually, costing consumers $3-5 billion per year.? Environmental impact is over 40 million tons of CO2.
Moving to High Efficiency transformers can significantly reduce long term energy losses while making contributions in reducing GHG (CO2) footprint.? Few products, if any, will remain functional longer than the buildingâ??s transformers!!!? Expected life-cycle use 32-years+.? Opportunities to reduce operating losses, associated heat output, and resulting impact on house A/C requirements.
The presentation will discuss: past, existing and future plans by the DOE to continue increasing efficiency requirements.? A number of case studies, typical transformer loading, operating losses, etc, will be included.
