Every RF system depends on shields and ground planes for RF containment, to provide proper constant impedance transmission lines, and to keep signals separated and signal integrity high. While seemingly simple, there is more subtlety to their operation than is commonly supposed. For instance, there are two fundamental theoretical models for coaxial shields. Solid shields are well understood but rigid, while braided shields are foundational for applications requiring flexibility. However, performance curves demonstrate that a braided shield is different from a solid shield with holes in it. For instance, an â??overbraidâ? effect can be caused by attempting to use too much shielding. In one experiment, researchers increased shielding effectiveness by 20 dB by removing braid wires from a commercial cable.
This talk will review shield theory, discuss how magnetic and electrostatic shields differ, cover why we have magnetic transformers but no equivalent â??capaformersâ? in parts catalogs, and explore the implications of the surprising independence of individual strands in stranded and braided conductors. Finally, a review of selected commercial products will discuss how the covered shielding principles should affect design choices.
