In honor of the tragic Charlie, the MBTA (the renamed MTA in the song by the Kingston Trio) called its electronic fare card the â??CharlieCard.???? Fast forward to 2008 when three MIT students â?? Zack Anderson (â??09), R. J. Ryan (â??09) and Alessandro Chiesa (â??08) â?? were set to present their findings on the security of the CharlieCard at DEFCON, a security conference held in Las Vegas.? They suddenly found themselves targets of a lawsuit by the MBTA under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) for â??delivering information to conference attendees that could be used to defraud the MBTA of transit fares.???
Ms. Jennifer Stisa Granick, Esq., Civil Liberties Director of San Francisco-based Electronic Frontier Foundation, successfully defended the students against the MBTA. Ms. Granick will share her experiences in this important electronic civil liberties case with the IEEE Computer Society chapter and MITCNC.
Learn how this MBTA case is one example of large companies misusing computer crime laws to:
1) squelch research and innovation,
2) how your freedom to do research is in jeopardy from MBTA-style lawsuits, and
3) what the Electronic Frontier Foundation is doing to protect your rights.
