Lightning Protection at the Kennedy Space Center
Historical Overview

Where:      Lightning Technologies, 10 Downing Park, Pittsfield
Date:         Wednesday, December 3, 2003
Time:         12:00 noon

In the early 1960s, the staff of the General Electric High Voltage Laboratory was approached to study the effects of lightning on launch facilities at what ultimately became the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and to help design lightning protection measures for the upcoming Apollo program to send an American astronaut to the moon.  Frank Fisher, who was a member of the team assembled for the task, will review the problems they faced and the measures that were ultimately incorporated into the design of the launch facilities for Complex 39.  He will also review some of the ways that the knowledge gained from that program has been incorporated into the design of the Space Shuttle and other aircraft of today.
