Improving the Power Grid Performance in the Complex Environment of Renewable Energy
By Dr. Damir Novosel, President of Quanta Technology

If you are interested in joining the Boston PES Chapter or joining the IEEE, please come along and talk to some of the Committee members

Energy and environmental concerns and power quality needs have led government and regulators to sponsor new programs in renewable energy capacity generation, energy efficiency, reliability improvements, and "smart grid" implementation. Utilities, ISOs, suppliers, government, regulators, academia, and private investors have been responding in developing "smart grid" technologies necessary to implement and deploy renewable energy, implement energy efficiency, and improve system reliability. The foundation of smart grid is advanced data communication, computing, and control technologies, comprising efficient transfer of data and control from/to/among many field units in the grid (including the complete supply chain: generation, transmission, distribution, and consumers).

This presentation will address the need for grid modernization, sustainable energy programs, and efficient smart grid technologies. The focus will be on transmission "smart grid" technologies, such as wide area monitoring, protection, and control (WAMPAC), enabling faster and better means to plan, operate, and maintain the grid with resulting improvements in system reliability and utility performance.

Damir Novosel is President of Quanta Technology. He has over 26 years of experience working with electric utilities and vendors. Dr. Novosel received his PhD Degree in Electrical Engineering from Mississippi State University in 1991. He holds 16 US and international patents and has published over 100 articles in Refereed Journals and Conference Proceedings mainly in the areas of power systems automation and design. His work earned him international recognition and reputation and was elected IEEE Fellow. Prior to joining Quanta Technology, he was President of T&D Consulting at KEMA in the US. He has also held various positions in ABB including Vice President of global product management for automation products and Manager of the power systems consulting group.
