Power Transformer Diagnostics: Novel Techniques and their Application
Charles Sweetser, Technical Service Manager for North and South America at OMICRON

NOTE THE ROOM AND BUILDING HAVE BEEN CHANGED FROM THE NORMAL VENUE. SEE BOTTOM OF PAGE.

If you are interested in joining the Boston PES Chapter or joining the IEEE, please come along and talk to some of the Committee members

Power transformers are large, high value items which represent a significant investment of capital and other resources in their specification, procurement and operation. This presentation will discuss both 'standard' and 'novel' electrical tests on power transformers and the benefits to owners/operators of the data obtained: from dissolved gas analysis and power factor through to frequency response analysis and moisture assessments. Understanding the true condition of a power transformer and its consequent ability to perform its function is the basis for predicting useful life.

Speaker's Bio:

Charles Sweetser received a B.S. Electrical Engineering in 1992 and a M.S. Electrical Engineering in 1996 from the University of Maine. He joined OMICRON electronics Corp USA, in 2009, where he presently holds the position of Technical Service Manager for North and South America. Prior to joining OMICRON, he worked 13 years in the electrical apparatus diagnostic and consulting business. He has published several technical papers for IEEE and other industry forums. As a member of IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) for 14 years, he actively participates in the IEEE Transformers Committee, and presently holds the position of Chair of the FRA Working Group PC57.149. He is also a member of several other working groups and subcommittees. Additional interests include condition assessment of power apparatus and acoustical measurements of partial discharge.

The meeting will be held at Olin College in Needham, MA. The presentation will start at 6:30PM. A brief Boston Chapter PES Meeting will precede the presentation.
