New Membership Development and CSS/IAS/RAS Chapter Chairs

On November 5, 2009, Wellicor Sorsor and Biao Zhang were appointed to positions on the Connecticut Section Executive Committee.

Wellicor is now in charge of Membership Development, which aims to increase IEEE membership by recruiting new members, retaining current members and recovering members in arrears.  As well, Membership Development also focuses on promoting elevations in grade.

Biao is the new chair of our joint chapter of Control Systems / Industry Applications / Robotics and Automation, abbreviated CSS/IAS/RAS. This chapter is dedicated to the advancement of research, development, and practice in automation and control systems.

      Welcome, Wellicor and Biao!

      New PES Chapter Chair

On June 2, 2009 George Berntsen was appointed to chair our chapter of Power and Energy Society (PES) (formerly known as Power Engineering Society).

The mission of PES is to be the leading provider of scientific information on electric power and energy for the betterment of society.

PES is our second largest chapter with 178 members. If you're a member of PES, now is a great time to become more involved locally.

Suresh Manchella Joins the IEEE-CT ExCom

The IEEE-CT Executive Committee on March 31 voted unanimously to appoint Suresh Manchella to the position of Member-At-Large for the remainder of the 2009 term. He will also serve as Chair of PACE (Professional Activities Committees for Engineers).

PACE (Professional Activities Committees for Engineers) is a grassroots network of IEEE volunteers and committees organized at the section and chapter level in the United States with support from their respective regions and IEEE-USA. The goal of the PACE Network is to promote the professional interests of IEEE's U.S. members as well as provide a mechanism for communication of members' views on their professional needs.

IEEE-CT Awards Prizes to Participants at the Connecticut Science Fair

The 61st annual Connecticut Science Fair was held at Quinnipiac College, Hamden, CT, from March 10 - 14, 2009. A team of IEEE volunteers acted as judges for the IEEE-CT section. They awarded the $250 Senior Honors Award to Alexander R. Ruyack of Brewster High School for his project "Macro-scale Synthesis of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotubes through Reduced Metal Catalysis." The $250 Junior Honors Award went to Hannah E. Guilani of Woodstock Middle School for her work, "What are the Effects of Light Intensity, Temperature, Wavelength, and Angle of Light Upon a Solar Cell?" Honorable mentions of $100 also were granted to Theresa A. Oei, William C. Newberry, Michael D. Tom, Aaron Y. Rabinowitz, and the pair Damian E. Robbins and John W. Rollinson. For additional information, check the CT Science Fair Homepage.

Michael Conroy, Brad Elker, Andy Fish, John Gallichotte, Suresh Manchella and Bill Wessman served as judges.

      Engineers Week 2009

The Connecticut Engineers Week dinner meeting was held Monday, February 9, 2009 at the Hawthorne Inn in Berlin, CT. It was held early (Engineers Week is actually February 15 to 21) in order to boost attendance since most schools have that week off and many families have other activities.

Frederick Wajcs of Northeast Utilities gave a presentation on the latest building codes and regulations for large projects, both new construction or renovations, or for smaller "turnkey" type projects. He also emphasized increased use of more efficient lighting, heating and air conditioning systems along with architectural modifications for things like "Light Harvesting" during daylight hours. This would require greater use of built in "Smart" energy control systems. He also discussed the Energy Rebate programs available.

The presentation was largely administrative in nature and directed mostly toward civil engineers and architects. There were approximately 75 in attendance with three exhibitor tables set up.

There were no afternoon "tutorial" sessions this year; only the dinner and presentation were offered.

      -Reported by Brad Elker.

      New PACE Chair

In January 2009 Mary-Lou Margiotta was appointed to chair our local Professional Activities Committee for Engineers (PACE). Before this Mary-Lou was chair of Membership Development.

PACE is a grassroots network of IEEE volunteers and committees organized at the section and chapter level in the United States with support from their respective regions and IEEE-USA. The goal of the PACE Network is to promote the professional interests of IEEE's U.S. members as well as provide a mechanism for communication of members' views on their professional needs.

      New AESS Chapter Chair

In January 2009 Bob Silkowski was appointed to chair our chapter of the Aerospace Electronic Systems Society (AESS).

AESS focuses on technical issues encountered by engineers who work in the aerospace, space and defense industries. If you're a member of AESS, now is a great time to become more involved locally.
