North Jersey Spring 2008 Student Presentation Contest

The Spring 2008 Student Presentation Contest is coming up!! The North Jersey Section will be holding presentation contests scheduled for March 25 for undergraduate students and on March 27 for graduate students. This contest has been held in years past. Its overwhelming success in generating student participation and interest make it a fantastic event for up and coming engineers. This year's contest will feature similar prizes ($$$) and have graduate and undergraduate categories.

The main focus of the presentation contest is to give students an opportunity to sharpen their communication skills, and help prepare for real life situations as practicing engineers and researchers. Additionally, the North Jersey Section contest provides an excellent chance for students to practice for the Region I Student Paper contest in the spring.

The contest at the North Jersey Section level is also supplemented by awarding cash prizes to the three best presentations in both graduate and undergradudate categories. All engineering students are encouraged to participate in submitting team or individual presentations on any project work RELATED to engineering. This LOCAL contest does NOT require students to write a full paper, just a slide-based presentation on technical or non-technical work is sufficient. Senior design projets, lab projects, personal engineering hobbies, engineering policy etc. are great topics to submit. Moving onto the regional contest requires submitting a short written paper.

The details of contest RULES, JUDGING criteria, viable TOPICS for presentations, and ABSTRACT FORM WILL BE SAME AS LAST YEAR. Also, if you would like to get an idea of what topics would be appropriate or how you can prepare your abstract, take a look at winners from past years at the NNJ IEEE SAC homepage archive.

This year's North Jersey Section Contest will be open to graduate and undergraduate students and first/second/third place prizes will be awarded in each category of $100/$75/$50. All participants MUST REGISTER by submitting an abstract by filling in the form available at the SAC website to qualify as a contest participant.

2007-2008 Student Activities Kickoff

Welcome back to the beginning of a new year of student activities for the North Jersey Section. This year promises to be filled with new activities and events. We hope you and your student branches will be participating in all of these events throughout the 2007-2008 academic year. Also, since the year is just getting started, it is a good time for a refresher on what your branch must be doing to be recognized by the IEEE. Information about IEEE, student branch bylaws and forms to fill out is available on the website given below.

My name is Russell Pepe, and I plan to Chair the Student Activities Committee (SAC) again this year. You can reach me at the following e-mail address: northjerseysac@ieee.org. I met several of you last year at and look forward to working with all of you during the upcoming school year.

To start off with, if you have not had elections yet, it would be a good idea to hold them and report to IEEE with the officer election form. Also, coming up is a leadership workshop that new (or potentially new) officers can attend to get essential training on running a branch. Your branch should fill out an annual plan of events in the fall and an annual report in the spring. Part of the reporting is on membership, which qualifies the branch for per member rebates. It's free money for turning in the right forms by the right time. Speaking of money, your branch should also plan fundraisers for basic expenses. If you really want to get started right, host one of these leadership workshops to learn the basics. Contact the organizer below. So what's happening this year? Lots of things!! Details of the event's exact location, date, time, directions, and registration will become available on the SAC website below. Free Student Leadership Training Workshops in and Professional Skills Development Workshop will start up in the fall. Instead of just holding single workshops, multiple individual workshops will be held at each university who wishes to receive formal training at their local branch for this and upcoming year's students. This holds true for both the leadership and professional skills training. If you would like to host these events then contact the organizer below. The annual Paper Presentation Contest is also planned for mid February/early March. This is a chance for students to showcase their hard work on different projects worked on during the year. It is open to both graduate and undergraduate students.

Last, but not least, the SAC and GOLD committees are looking for volunteers who might be graduating soon and would like to help out in the North Jersey Section. To find out how you can help, contact northjerseysac@ieee.org , and visit the new website at http://ewh.ieee.org/r1/north_jersey/sac. You will find the latest information updated there or you can also join the mailing list to get regular reminders of different events.

To start off with, if you have not had elections yet, it would be a good idea to hold them and report to IEEE with the officer election form. Also coming up is a leadership workshop that new (or potentially new) officers can attend to get essential training on running a branch. Your branch should fill out an annual plan of events in the fall and an annual report in the spring. Part of the reporting is on membership which qualifies the branch for per member rebates. Its free money for turning in the right forms by the right time. Speaking of money, your branch should also plan fundraisers for basic expenses.

So what's happening this year ? Lots of things !! Details of the event's exact location, date, time, directions, and registration will become available on the SAC website below. Free Student Leadership Training Workshops, Professional Skills Development Workshops. These workshops are planned for throughout the fall semester.

Also, the Antennas Theory and Techniques/Microwave Propagation Chapter will be holding their annual minishow on October 3rd from 9am to 6pm at the Radisson Hotel in Fairfield, NJ. If you would like to attend or participate as a student volunteer, contact Kirit Dixit at kdixit@ieee.org for details.

Last, but not least, the SAC and GOLD committees are looking for volunteers who might be graduating soon and would like to help out in the North Jersey Section. To find out how you can help, contact the organizer at northjerseysac "AT" ieee "DOT" org

A Delayed But Successfull Student Presentation Contest

The student presentation contest originally planned for Tuesday, March 6 was delayed by one week due to the storm that wasn't. Despite the change of date, the contest was well attended and had a good number of participants. There were close to 40 attendees and six registered presenters. Five judges volunteered their time to grade each of the speakers. The purpose of the contest is to help students improve their communication and presentation skills. Each presenter received the judge's comment sheets to help touch up their weaker areas.

The contest started with dinner and then moved right into the graduate and undergraduate catagories. Many different topics were covered using highly creative slide programs. Students from Fairleigh Dickinson University and New Jersey Institute of Technology covered topics from bio-medial engineering to Petri Nets to the SETI project. Winners in both catagories were awarded 1st/2nd/3rd place prizes in the amounts of $100/$75/$50 respectively. All participants also received official certificates. Click here for the winners, titles, and abstracts.

The next round of competition will be the regional contest to be held at Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY on Friday, April 27, 2001. All the details of their program can be found at http://ieee.syr.edu The North Jersey Section Presentation contest will be again held next spring. Greater participation is hoped and the call for presentations will start early in November. ALL North Jersey GRAD/UGRADS are welcome to participate for prizes. Special thanks goes to our judges, A.
