IEEE Student Branch News Electronic Alert For IEEE Student Branch Counselors and Chairs - August 1999 130th Student Branch registered Nearly 5,000 new Student members have joined IEEE using the online student application in the 1999 membership year. It is a great tool for recruiting new Student members and we encourage your Branch to register to start the new academic year off right. Student Branches worldwide may request to be added to the service by meeting the following criteria: · Students must have easy web access. · The Branch Counselor MUST be a frequent web user and must agree to be a participant. · Your Branch must promote applications over the web site. Here is how it works. Students apply through the web, and get a reference number. They can track their application through the web as well. The Branch Counselor accesses the application over the web and approves it over the web. IEEE Staff in New Jersey retrieve approved applications electronically. Student Branches can access information about the applications as well. Students mail in their payment along with a submission receipt that they print out from the web site. Students applying from the USA and Canada can submit credit card information by a 1-800 number, and need not mail in any information if they use this service. Outside the U.S., the submission receipt can be sent by fax to the IEEE Operations Center if paying with a credit card. f your Student Branch is interested in registering for the program, please send an email message to applyreq@sandbox.ieee.org. The Student Branch Counselor must also send an email message indicating his or her willingness to participate in the program and approve new applications on the web. Student Branch Centers of Excellence Program Grants up to US$5,000 are now available to IEEE Student Branches around the world. Provide a real and needed service to the IEEE Student members at your school by establishing an IEEE Student Branch Center of Excellence. The IEEE Foundation has allocated US$50,000 and the Life Members Committee US$25,000 to help establish these Centers to serve as visible evidence of the exciting world of electrical and computer engineering, as a central location for Student Branch activities and as a resource center on college campuses. To apply for a grant, students must develop a business plan with the help and support of their university, (the university should provide space on campus), department chair and the IEEE Student Branch Counselor. Proposals are due 15 August 1999. Complete details are available online at www.ieee.org/sac. Q&A System Is Live! IEEE is offering a great new service for students. Many students who have chosen electrical or computer engineering as a career may want to know more about working in the ^Óreal world^Ô. The IEEE Q&A System gives students the opportunity to ask career-related questions of professionals working in the electro technology industry. The Q&A system is an interactive system to supply the benefits of a personal conversation between the student and the practicing engineering (respondent) while using an asynchronous Internet communications model. The Q&A system is part of the IEEE Sloan Career Cornerstone Series. The respondents, who are electro technology professionals, have volunteered their time to answer questions posed by students. Please visit www.ieee.org/qa/ and try out this new service. For more career-related information, visit www.ieee.org/sloancareers/ Student Branch rebates If you need some operating funds for your Branch, please submit your annual report.
