BRANCH NEWS ELECTRONIC ALERT!
APRIL 1998
Attention IEEE Student Branch officers!
IEEE Alias Now Available to Every Member
IEEE email aliases have been available to IEEE volunteers for several years.
Now IEEE is offering email aliases to all current members in all grades,
students too! A major benefit of an IEEE alias is free virus scanning of
all email attachments. Also if you change your Internet provider, you need
only make one update by updating your IEEE alias. This is great, especially
for graduating students moving from a university environment to industry.
It also gives you an easy email address to remember while also letting
others know that you are an IEEE member.
You can apply for you own IEEE alias by either using the web or email. To
apply via the web go to: www.ieee.org/eleccomm or to apply by email, send
an email message to alias-info@ieee.org. You will receive an auto response
message with instructions. It will, of course, be the alias owner^Òs
responsibility to make sure that their alias points to an active, viable
email address. Failure to maintain the alias will result in it being
terminated. In addition, IEEE members who fail to pay their dues and are
put in dues arrears will have their email aliases terminated.
ETI Database
ETI is the IEEE's "Electro-Technology Industry" Database system which
includes over 43,000 companies that employ electro-technology professionals
in the United States along with over 150,000 senior executives. This is a
free service available ONLY to IEEE members. Access the database at
. The database was developed in 1994 by
the IEEE Student Branch at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) to
help IEEE Student members find employment and displaced IEEE professionals
find employment. The UAB Student Branch is the host for the ETI Database
sysstem. IEEE members having questions regarding the system can send email
to . A mailing of ETI information was sent to all
Student Branch Chairs and Counselors in January 1998. This is an excellent
job search tool and member benefit and we encourage you to use it!
Reminder - How to Sign up for the Online Student Membership Application
The Student Activities Committee is continuing prototyping the on line
application form for Student members. This is for new applications only.
Since 1 September 1997, over 1,300 new Student members have joined the IEEE
using the on line application. Nearly 50 IEEE Student Branches are signed
up for the program.
Student Branches worldwide may request to be added to the service by meeting
the following criteria:
· Students must have easy web access.
· The Branch Counselor MUST be a frequent web user and must agree to be a
participant.
· Your Branch must promote applications over the web site so that we can
generate traffic.
Here is how it works. Students apply through the web, and get a reference
number. They can track their application through the web as well. The Branch
Counselor accesses the application over the web and approves it over the
web. IEEE Staff in New Jersey retrieve approved applications
electronically. Student Branches can access information about the
applications as well.
Students mail in their payment along with a submission receipt that they
print out from the web site. Students applying from the USA and Canada can
submit credit card information by a 1-800 number, and need not mail in any
information if they use this service. Outside the U.S., the submission
receipt can be sent by fax to the IEEE Operations Center if paying with a
credit card.
If your Branch has a strong interest, please email applyreq@sandbox.ieee.org
with your request. Your Branch counselor must also send an email message
indicating their willingness to participate, and approving the Branches'
request.
We look forward to your participation in this great program for recruiting
new IEEE Student members!
Need Funds for your Branch? Don't Forget about your Student Branch rebate!
Annual Reports are due 1 May or as close to that date as possible. Yes, it
is that time of year again. The Annual Report of Activities covering
1997-98 activities is due now 1 May 1998. If your branch is on a different
academic schedule, please
send the report six months after your academic year begins. Send the report
to Student Services, so we can release your Branch rebate of $1.10 per
member AND record the most current officers. Reporting your email address
will ensure that your branch will be added to the electronic mailnig lists.
Rebates are based on membership statistics as of 31 December 1997. Rebate
checks will be sent to Branch Counselors approximately one month after we
receive the report.
IEEE is very interested in your activities and we encourage you to use the
report to tell us about the activities and programs your branch organized
this year. Remember, according to IEEE Bylaws, your branch must hold at
least three
meetings a year, keep the branch membership above ten members and submit
required reports, including the annual report of activities.
To facilitate electronic submission of the reports, Student Services has
set up lists for Student Branches to use. By sending the
report to the list, you will be sending a copy to IEEE Student Services and
your RSAC and RSR. Branch Chairs, PLEASE send the report to your counselor
first, for endorsement. Your RSAC (Regional Student Activities Committee
Chair) and your RSR (Regional Student Representative) are very interested in
your activities and they provide you with important information about
Regional contests and conferences and need to be kept up to date too.
Below are the addresses to use for each Region:
