About the Event:

The Town of Portsmouth cut the ribbon on its wind turbine generator in March 2009 and has since been generating electricity.  This 1.5 mW turbine, the largest in Rhode Island, has already generated more than 1,000,000 kWh and is expected to save 4 million dollars in energy over the next 20 years.  Here is an opportunity to gain knowledge about its technical features and economics.

About our Presenter:

Gary Gump is the Portsmouth Economic Development Committee (PEDC) Sustainable Energy subcommittee chair and has been intimately involved with the planning for this project.  Gary also serves as the vice-chair of the PEDC and is a member of the town’s Redevelopment Agency.  He is retired and has worked in both the electric utility and electrical equipment industry.

Directions:

Take I-195 to Fall River, MA; take exit 8A onto Route 24 South toward TIVERTON R.I./NEWPORT R.I; take exit number 1 toward RI-138/MIDDLETOWN/NEWPORT BEACHES.  Bear right at the end of the exit onto Turnpike Avenue.

To the windmill: Follow Turnpike Avenue 0.1 miles.  Turn left on the one-way street marked Portsmouth High School.  (Note there is a private driveway immediately before the high school.  Use the one-way sign as your guide).  Continue to the high school and go between the high school and the gymnasium.  Parking is on the right or left just past the school.  The path to the windmill is on the left.

To the town hall: Continue on Turnpike Avenue.  At the next set of lights bear right onto RI-138/East Main Road.  Portsmouth Town Hall is located approximately 0.7 miles on the right hand side of the road, at the intersection of East Main Road and Middle Road.  There is limited parking immediately before and after the Town Hall.  There is more parking behind the School Administration building across from Town Hall on Middle Road..

From the windmill to the Town Hall: Turn around and reverse direction.  At the far end of the high school turn left, and continue down the hill.  Turn right on East Main Road.  It will merge with Turnpike Avenue.  Follow directions for the Town Hall above.
