Welcome to the Bangalore Chapter of IEEE Communications Society

Invited Talk Series

3G/UMTS data network architecture and network components
Dr. Surya Kumar Kovvali, VP Technology, Movik Networks, USA
Venue: Room No. 134, IIIT Bangalore, Electronic City (Opposite Infosys Gate No. 1)

Date and Time: 7th April 2009, Noon to 1pm

 Abstract:
This presentation is an overview of UMTS/3G/HSDPA Packet data network architecture, network elements and protocol operation.  The focus is on Architecture Components, their roles and interfaces for delivering data services, and less on MAC & Radio Link Layers.  Control Plane & User Plane Protocol layers within the Network Elements such as Base Station, RNC, SGSN, GGSN, in delivering data services are covered.   Protocol interaction between the Network elements is exemplified by walking through a User Equipment (UE) initiated internet access operation.

 Brief Bio of Speaker:

Surya Kumar Kovvali, Ph.D., is Founder and VP of Technology, Movik Networks with headquarters in Boston (USA) and R& D operations in Bangalore.  At Movik, he leads product architecture, strategy and evolution in developing wireless infrastructure device for mobile data networks.  Formerly he was Chief Scientist at Big Band Networks, Telsima Inc., and Founder & Chief Scientist, at Coriolis Networks.  He has over 25 years of experience in architecture, design and AD of Telecom & Datacom Network Products, and Storage/Cluster Systems.   His most recent accomplishments include identifying product opportunities in mobile data networks (Movik Networks), leading IPTV Carrier Edge Network platform (Big Band Networks), inventing a multiplexing method for TDM/Packet data aggregation, securing VC funding, leading product development from concept through customer deployments in US & Japan (Coriolis Networks, Telsima).  At both Coriolis & Telsima he led Carrier Ethernet/MSPP platform development for Residential Broadband and Enterprise Transport services (Ethernet & SONET/SDH).  Prior to this he was a Consulting Engineer at High Performance Network Group at Cabletron Systems & Digital Equipment Corporation. At Digital he led the Architecture & Software Development of GigaSwitch/ATM/IP product family.  Prior to his tenure in the networking group, he served as an Architect in Cluster Architecture (SCA) group, where he led FDDI Storage Server & CI-DSSI bridge projects. He was lead architect for the Digital’s Low-End Cluster architecture (DSSI).  He has received several Performance & Excellence Awards for his notable contributions at Digital.   His expertise includes SONET/SDH Telecom Networks Ethernet Data Networks and Cluster/Storage Interconnect Architectures.  Dr. Kovvali holds a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Kansas State University, USA, and a Masters degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India.
