Energy Efficient Electrical Apparatus & Systems

Theme of the Seminar
This Seminar concentrates on following major constituents of the electrical Power systems.

Transformers
Transformers pose two major basic problems : The diversity factors generally are low creating high to very high summated KVA ratings and magnetising currents & continuous losses. They do not operate at their high designed efficiencies. New construction materials are being developed. The insulation technology is changing fast. There is a shift towards higher sizes and higher voltages on 'Dry' type of transformers. Maharashtra State Electricity Board, one of the largest user of power transformers in the country have developed specifications and designs which answers these problems satisfactorily.

Induction Motors

Induction motors are the largest energy consumers in the Indian Networks as well as elsewhere in the world. Here again motors of less than 25 HP account for a large portion of this. Indian and international specifications have shifted to high efficiency induction motors. Construction methods (control of air gaps, reduction in bearing currents etc) are evolving all the time, along with better insulation & higher slot utilisation.

Induction motors are undergoing another challenge by way of being forced with variable speed drives, which improve energy utilisation efficiencies. The VSD's also bring in new problems. VSD is proposed as a sub- theme.

Electric Generators

With the un-reliability of power supply from Indian networks, a huge generating capacity has been added in the form of stand-by generators all over the country (Almost 35% of the electricity board installed capacity) There are two more factors which are bringing generators into prominences. The rising tariffs by state electricity boards encourage a price competitive in-house generation. With Govt. emphasis on wind-power, wind generators will be playing a more prominent part. There are new innovations in construction and design of electric generators. Such as ingeneous utilisation of grain orientation of stampings, improvements in slot area utilisation, ruggedness etc. induction generators used in wind power have their own specialties

Capacitors & Cables

With intolerably high network losses, capacitors are occupying an almost centre-stage in the electrical apparatus panaroma. Latest dielectric materials offer higher unit sizes, higher security & safety. The controls are shifting to microelectronics.

Cables are gradually replacing overhead distribution mesh in the Indian cities. HV cables both in AC & DC are crossing voltage barriers and overcoming the age old defects like water treeing etc.

Industrial electrical systems

It forms a country wide activity by way of designs & construction. The volumes involved though scattered all over, are really large. New construction materials lower the erection time, costs & bring in more efficiency. Reactive power control & gradual changeover to embedded microelectronics is coming in very fast
