The
IEEE WIE Affinity Group of Calcutta Section was formed
on July 28, 2006 with Dr. Iti Saha Misra as the interim
Chair. After that on September 01, 2006 it was formally
inaugurated by Prof. Salil K. Sanyal, Chairman, and
IEEE Calcutta Section in a lively inauguration ceremony.
Subsequently the Executive Committee was constituted
in its Annual General Meeting on January 18, 2007
with Dr. Iti Saha Misra as the Chair.
There has been a paradigm shift in engineering workforce
over the past couple of decades. The inhospitable
factory floors have been replaced by more conducive
working environment in the present day industries
that demand less of physical power and more of skilled
manipulation coupled with deftness of handling. Automation
and other e-enabled technologies and services have
provided immense opportunities to women technologists
and skilled workers. Unfortunately, these emerging
opportunities still remain relatively unexplored by
women. The ever increasing demand for trained technologists
in industries cannot be met unless both men and women
workforce start participating. There is still a gap
between the number of men and women engineers and
technology professionals. This is a global phenomenon
that needs to be addressed immediately.

IEEE WIE aims at making women
aware of the present day scenario and the employment
opportunities made available.
IEEE WIE was formed with a vision
to nurture the talent ecosystem by enhancing
the participation from women. It is responsible
for facilitating the development of programs
and activities that promote the entry into and
retention of women in engineering programs;
enhancing the career advancement of women in
the profession; promoting IEEE membership and
retaining IEEE women members.
Speaking
from a gender agnostic platform IEEE WIE would
like to draw the attention to the world wide
phenomena of a very low percentage of women
aspiring to become Engineers. The reasons could
be several economic, education system, social
obligation, opportunity, motivation etc. WIE
Kolkata would strive to find out some of the
reasons and attempt to address it locally.

Vedic
India had a culture of equal opportunity that gave
us women in science and mathematics. As India moves
towards enlightened future, we need to alleviate the
perils that pull back and create an environment for
all to thrive which includes the women as well.
An
event cannot be successful without the support from
different quarters whether men and women, individual
and organizations. We hope that WIE, Kolkata would
be able to Bridge the Gap between the ignorance and
opportunity in engineering for the women who share
50% of that promise. To enable this we need effort
and co-operation from all irrespective of gender bias.
Vision - Nurture the talent ecosystem by enhancing
the
participation from women.
Mission - Courageous women nurture courageous women.
Goals
1. Promote the entry into and retention of women in
engineering
2. Enhance the career advancement of women in the
profession
3. Promote IEEE membership and retention of IEEE women
members
