Highlights of the Recent Activities of IEEE ComSoc Society in the session 2014-2015:

A. Distinguished Lecturer Tour : DLT 2014-2015

1. Smart Body Sensor Object Networking - April 28, 2015

DLT Speaker: Dr. Bhumip Khasnabish (Senior director in the Strategy Planning and Standards Development Department of ZTE (TX) Inc., USA)

Venue: Room No T-3-7, ETCE Department , Jadavpur University

Theme of presentation: Dr. Bhumip Khasnabish introduces Smart Body Sensor Objects (SBSOs) including their Networking and Internetworking. A few use cases including the relevant privacy and protocol requirements are discussed. General usage and deployment etiquette along with the relevant Regulatory implications are then pointed out.

Details of presentation: Wearable and implantable body sensors for health, vital organ/entities, etc. monitoring, self and surrounding audio and video recording, augmenting the reality, etc. are. rapidly becoming utility devices. Making these devices smart and capable of networking and Internetworking opens up a whole new world of privacy-invading Internet innovations in the increasingly mobile, connected and analytics-driven society. Handheld device and machine-tomachine driven any-area and any-technology networking will change humanity and society forever. Smartness can be incorporated in the Body Sensor Objects (BSOs) by embedding (a) virtualization, (b) predictive analytics, and (c) proactive computing and communications capabilities. In this talk, Dr.

C. IEEE Technical Lecture Series

1. Grid, Cloud, Fog and Beyond - August 29, 2014

Speaker: Dr. Arijit Mukherjee (TCS Innovation Lab, Kolkata)

Venue: Room No T-3-7, ETCE Department , Jadavpur University

Details of presentation: The future Internet, or the Internet of Things and the Internet of Everything, whatever we have now seems inadequate. So the concept of Fog computing comes which brings the concept of using mobile devices, home gateways, set top boxes as computing devices. In this talk, the concepts of Big Data, the history of the Grid and Cloud and the rise of Fog computing as a new paradigm along with some research cases that are actively pursued at TCS Innovation Labs Kolkata are delivered nicely by Dr. Mukherjee.

Participants : 50, UG and PG students, Research scholars

2. Security and Privacy in IoT - August 29, 2014

Speaker: Arijit Ukil (TCS Innovation Lab, Kolkata)

Venue: Room No T-3-7, ETCE Department , Jadavpur University

Details of presentation: IoT (Internet of Things) systems like smart energy management expose sensor data that sense human activity, containing private information. Such fine-grained sensor data also makes different important 3rd party applications like smart grid control, dynamic pricing, elderly monitoring possible. The fear of privacy breach (“spying inside home”) impedes practical deployment of such applications and its acceptability. Unlike data and network security research, data privacy research is at its nascent stage. Research activities on smart meter data privacy is gaining pace, even governmental agencies are engaged to issue guidelines regarding protection of consumer privacy. In this talk, particular focus on the description of IoT data privacy problem, its impact and current solution on privacy preservation of smart energy managementtion of smart energy management systems have been covered.

Participants : 50, UG and PG students, Research scholars

D. Technical Research Lectures by PG students

Date and Venue: 28 June 2014, ETCE, Broadband Wireless Communication LAB, 11.30 am to 3.00 pm
