Annual Report
Introduction:
The geographic area under the jurisdiction of IEEE Kolkata Section has several groups active in the area of Dielectrics and Insulation Engineering. Quite a few of these group members are IEEE members and some of them publish regularly in IEEE Transactions on DEI. This chapter provides a platform for close interaction between academicians, researchers and practicing engineers.
 
A. Technical Lecture Meeting:
  • “Continuous Integral Sliding Mode Control: A Second Order Sliding Mode Approach” by Prof. Bijnan Bandyopadhyay, Systems and Control Engineering, IIT Bombay on 27 February, 2014 at Seminar room, Electrical Engineering Department, Jadavpur University.
  • “Smart Phone based Instrumentation” by Dr. Debangshu Dey, Electrical Engineering Department, Jadavpur University on 14 November, 2014 at A.P.C Roy Hall, Netaji Subhash Engineering College, Garia, Kolkata.
B. Educational Activity:
  • “Condition Monitoring of Oil-Paper Insulation of Transformers” by Prof. Sivaji Chakravorti, Electrical Engineering Department, Jadavpur University on 31 March, 2014 at Senate Hall, NIT Rourkela, Odisha.
C. Student Activity:
  • “Circuistic of Convolution 2014” organized by the students of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Jadavpur University, on 15 February, 2014 at Electrical Engineering Department, Jadavpur University.
D. Seminar:
  • At Seminar Hall, College of Engineering and Technology, Berhampore, Murshidabad on 04 April, 2014:

E. Workshops:
  • “Advanced Technique in Making Printed Circuit Boards using Photoresists” by Dr. Biswendu Chatterjee, Electrical Engineering Department, Jadavpur University on 27 November at Seminar room, High Tension Laboratory, Jadavpur University.
H. Membership Strength:
The total membership strength of the DEIS Kolkata Chapter was 22 at the year-end.
 
Concluding Remarks:
Considering the activities carried out in 2014, it may be concluded that it has been an active year for the IEEE DEIS Kolkata Chapter. The chapter remains committed to organize quality programs in the years to come. The success of the student activity at the beginning of the year needs a special mention. The Chapter extends warm welcome to all its members and wishes that more and more insulation and power engineers join the Chapter making it a vibrant platform for exchange of knowledge, expertise, and pleasant company.

  • "Virtual High Voltage Laboratory" by Prof. N.K.Kishore, Electrical Engineering Department, IIT Kharagpur, on 31 July 2013 at Electrical Engineering Department, Jadavpur University.
B. Distinguished Lecture Program:
  • "Ferrohydrodynamic and Electrohydrodynamic Flow Phenomena" by Prof. Markus Zahn, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, on 03 Jan 2013 at Electrical Engineering Department, Jadavpur University.
C. Conference Activity:
  • The First International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (IEEE CATCON 2013) technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) and organized by Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society Chapter of IEEE Kolkata Section was held on December 06 to 08, 2013, in Kolkata, India. The venue of the conference was Jadavpur University Main Campus, Kolkata. The High Tension Laboratory of Jadavpur University was the local host of the event.
    The technical program of IEEE CATCON 2013 consisted of tutorials, plenary talks, and oral paper presentations. Research papers describing original work on theories, methodologies, abstractions, algorithms, industry applications and case studies were presented.

  • "Gas Insulated Transmission Lines" by Dr. Hermann Koch, Siemens, Germany, on 06 Dec 2013 at K. P. Basu Memorial Hall, Jadavpur University, Kolkata.
  • "Transformer Condition Monitoring Using Dielectric Response Measurement" by Prof. Tapan K. Saha, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, on 06 Dec 2013 at TEQIP Hall-I, Jadavpur University, Kolkata.
  • "Condition Monitoring of Motors and Generators" by Mr. Cajetan Pinto, Global R&D Head, ABB Motors and Generators, Service and Vice President for ABB in Mumbai, India, on 06 Dec 2013 at TEQIP Hall-II, Jadavpur University, Kolkata.
C2. Plenary Talks:
  • "Insulation Issues Related To Smart Grid And Industry Applications" by Prof. Sheshakamal Jayaram, University of Waterloo, on 07 Dec 2013 at K. P. Basu Memorial Hall, Jadavpur University, Kolkata.
  • "1200kV Transmission and Smart Grid" by Dr. Subir Sen, General Manager (Smart Grid), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd., on 08 Dec 2013 at K. P. Basu Memorial Hall, Jadavpur University, Kolkata.
  • "Partial Discharge Detection in Transformers during Lightning Impulses" by Dr. Rodolfo Garcia-Colon, Electricity and Power Systems, Mexico and IEEE DEIS Chapters’ Chair, on 08 Dec 2013 at K. P. Basu Memorial Hall, Jadavpur University, Kolkata.
C3. Laboratory Visit:
  • High Tension Laboratory, Electrical Engineering Department, Jadavpur University, was the local host of the First International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (IEEE CATCON 2013). In this context a visit to High Tension Laboratory of Electrical Engineering Department, Jadavpur University, had been organized for the conference delegates.
C4. Industry Meet:
  • In IEEE CATCON 2013 an industry meet was arranged to discuss the current topics related to condition monitoring of power equipment.
 
D. Membership Strength:
The total membership strength of the DEIS Kolkata Chapter was 22 at the year-end.

Introduction:
The geographic area under the jurisdiction of IEEE Kolkata Section has several groups active in the area of Dielectric Engineering. Quite a few of these group members are IEEE members and some of them publish regularly in the Transactions on DEI. These members wanted to come together under the umbrella of IEEE DEIS by forming this chapter. The efforts of these enthusiastic members bore fruit when IEEE approved on 14th May 2012 the formation of IEEE DEIS (DEI32) Chapter under IEEE Kolkata Section. The geo-code of the chapter is CH10608. This chapter will provide a platform for close interaction between academicians, researchers and practicing engineers.

  • "HVDC: Power Transmission Highway: by Dr. Rajat Majumder of Siemens Energy Inc, USA, on 06 Dec 2012 at Electrical Engg Dept, Jadavpur University.
B. Educational Activity:
  • "Testing of Insulation Integrity of High Voltage Equipment" by Mr. Ashoke Chakraborty, Sr. Manager, CESC Ltd, on 18 Aug 2012 at Academy of Technology, Adisaptagram.
C. Student Activity:
  • "Gas Insulated Transmission Lines" by Prof. Sivaji Chakravorti, Jadavpur University, on 25 Aug 2012 at Budge Budge Institute of Technology.
D. Seminar:
IEEE DEIS Kolkata Chapter was a technical co-sponsor of the 1st International Conference on Power and Energy in NERIST, 2012 to be held on December 28-29, 2012 at North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), Nirjuli, Arunachal Pradesh.
 
E. Distinguished Lecture Program:
  • "Multiphysics Modeling of Streamer Discharges in Transformer Oil-Pressboard Systems" by Prof. Markus Zahn, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, on 28 Dec 2012 at North Eastern Regional Institute of Science & Technology, Arunachal Pradesh.

G. Membership Development Programme:
DEIS Kolkata Chapter has nominated one active member for elevation to Senior Member grade in 2012. The nominated member was Prof. Saradindu Ghosh (M80536571). He has been duly elevated to the grade of Senior Member in the year 2012.
 
H. Membership Strength:
The total membership strength of the DEIS Kolkata Chapter was 22 at the year-end.
 
Concluding Remarks:
Considering in totality the activities being carried out as well as planned in 2012, it may be considered as a good beginning of the IEEE DEIS Kolkata Chapter. The Chapter extends warm welcome to all its members and wishes that more and more insulation and power engineers join the Chapter making it a vibrant platform for exchange of knowledge, expertise, and pleasant company.
