A DETAILED REPORT ON IEEE WORKSHOP ON "RECENT TRENDS IN ELECTRICAL MACHINES AND DRIVES" HELD ON SEPTEMBER 18 & 19, 1998 VIS-A-VIS IEEE DISTINGUISHED LECTURER PROF. MICHEL E. POLOUJADOFF'S VISIT TO DELHI FROM SEPTEMBER 17 TO 20, 1998

Prof. Michel E. Poloujadoff, IEEE Distinguished Lecturer from Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, France, upon his arrival on a nine-day visit to India landed in Delhi on September 17, 1998. IEEE PES-IAS Delhi Chapter took advantage of his presence to have a workshop on "Recent Trends in Electrical Machines and Drives" on September 18 and 19, 1998 which was jointly organized with IEEE Delhi Section and the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Delhi. The two-day workshop held at IIT Delhi itself was attended by 18 registered participants and 10 others (i.e., Research Scholars and Faculty Members) and the following topics were covered:

- Economic Appraisal of Losses in Electrical Machines Towards Energy Conservation by Prof. Michel E. Poloujadoff

- Synthesis of Electric Machinery and Study of 3-Dimensional Flux Plots (Case Example: Transformers) by Prof. Michel E. Poloujadoff

- Energy Conservation and Energy Audit Facilities at IIT Delhi and Some Associated Demonstration by Prof. S.S.Murthy of EE Dept., IIT Delhi

- Hybrid Vehicle: An IIT Delhi Experience by Prof. R.Arockiasamy of IDD Centre, IIT Delhi

- PE Controllers for Energy Conservation in Drives by Prof. B.P.Singh of EE Dept., IIT Delhi

- Cleaning up the AC Mains by Prof. C.M.Bhatia of EE Dept., IIT Delhi

- Active Filters by Prof. Bhim Singh of EE Dept., IIT Delhi

- Demonstration of Motor Test Facilities, Adjustable Speed Drives and Hybrid Vehicle

Beside the workshop, there was a general discussion in the evening of September 18, 1998 for an hour followed by the second Edison Memorial Lecture on 'The History of Some High Speed Electric Trains'. These were attended by a large audience comprising of a batch of senior officers of Indian Railways, engineers from the concerned industries and from academic field.

On September 19, 1998 however Prof. Poloujadoff had an off and visited Tajmahal and other historical places of interest in and around Agra. Before his departure to Hyderabad in the evening hours on the following day, he was taken round places like, Red Fort, Rajghat, Lotus Temple and Qutub Minar in old and New Delhi.
