A Report on 5th Thomas Alva Edison Memorial Lecture and Other Concurrent Activities

With the Power Engineering Society providing the support, newly included Distinguished Lecturers (DL) from Canada, Prof. Mohindar S. Sachdev of University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK and Dr. Prabha Shankar Kundur of Powertech Labs Inc., Surrey, BC  during their tour to this part of the world came to Delhi in early November 2001 during three-day XXVII Annual Convention & Exhibition (ACE2001) of IEEE India Council. The event hosted by Delhi Section with theme as Convergence in Semiconductor, Power, Information Technology, Communications and Entertainment (SPICE, in short) had four half-a-day tutorials on November 01, followed by twelve paper presentation sessions (each starting with an invited lecture) in the remaining two days.

Though PES-IAS Delhi Chapter was behind organizing two tutorials and two invited lectures in Power by the PES  DLs during ACE2001, specifically it sponsored one of the invited lectures on 'Online Dynamic Security Assessment, Monitoring & Control of Power Systems' by Dr. Prabha Shankar Kundur on November 02, 2001 as its fifth Thomas Alva Edison Memorial Lecture. In his lecture for the secure operation of electric power systems Dr. Kundur elaborated on

- secure operation facilitation

- online dynamic security assessment

Under other concurrent activities, as mentioned earlier, Dr. Kundur gave also a tutorial on ''Power Systems in the 21st Century: Trends, Challenges and Role of New Technologies" on the first day of ACE2001. This was followed by the tutorial of Dr. Sachdev on "Power System Protection and Numerical Protection". On the third day he delivered his invited lecture on 'Intelligent Power System Protection'.
