TECHNICAL SEMINAR ON 18TH DECEMBER 2010 AT CHENNAI

“CAPTIVE POWER GENERATION”

“EMERGING TRENDS IN DG SETS”

“IDEAL INSTALLATION GUIDELINES FOR DG SETS”

 “ENERGY CONSERVATION IN HT INDUSTRIES”

– A BRIEF REPORT

With explosive increases in the prices of fuel especially crude oil, the crisis faced on energy front of our country is becoming serious with no quick solution insight. This being the national scenario, the energy situation in Tamilnadu is no way different. It is still in precarious condition. Our state depends on wind energy a seasonal energy source and we all know how scarce power situation in our state is with power cuts and load shedding. One of the immediate measures to meet this situation is “Energy Conservation.” Considering the significance of Energy Conservation and to create an awareness amongst the consumers about the difficult power situation.

Energy conservation day has been celebrated on 14th Dec 2010 at Chennai. We all know that it always pays to be different. On recognizing the valuable contribution made by the captive power generation in facing the difficult power situation and also the importance of Energy conservation in HT Industries and M/s Cummins India Ltd, Chennai have jointly organized a Technical Seminar on these topics at Chennai on 14th Dec 2010. The salient features of this seminar are brought out as follows.

Thiru A.K.Venkatasamy, President TNEIEA delivered the welcome address. Thiru S. Appavoo, Chief Electrical Inspector inaugurated the seminar and delivered the Inaugural address. The chief guest briefly explained the significance of Energy conservation in all sectors and the need for utilizing energy efficient products.

On this occasion, Dr. G. V. Rao, chairman, Product Safety Engineering Society of IEEE, USA have made a presentation and explained the benefits that would accrue by becoming a member in the above society. His presentation mainly focused on the need for the safety in the design and operation of all electrical equipment and devices.

In the ensuing technical session three presentations were made.

1.     Energy conservation in HT industries by Mrs .K. Selvam, Electrical Inspector (Tech), Chennai. This presentation mainly focused on the benefits that would accrue to the industries by Energy Conservation and the areas in which energy savings could be achieved in adequate measures. Among the areas covered are,

Ø  Power delivery system

Ø  Motive power load

Ø  Compressed Air System

Ø  Lighting

Ø  Refrigeration and air conditioning

Ø  Pumps

The speaker then dealt in detail the losses caused by Harmonics and the methods to eliminate it.

2.     Captive Power Generation-Emerging Trends in DG Sets by Mr. S. Shankar, Regional Manager, Cummins India Ltd.

The speaker mainly focused on the issues that require attention while selecting a DG set. Among them are

§  Generation and load mismatch

§  Unclear understanding of the nature of the load

§  Improper installation

§  Inadequate ventilation

§  Inadequate maintenance

§  Operation at low load levels

§  Maximum voltage drops (Starting and running)

§  Maximum frequency Dip

§  Incorrect specification of ambient temperature and altitude

§  Use of Capacitors in DG sets for Improving the Power Factor.

3.     Ideal installation guidelines for DG sets by Mr.V.Lakshmanan, BDM HHP TN&KL.

The speaker explained the issues connected with the installation of DG sets with case studies and pictures. The maintenance aspects of DG sets were also explained in detail.
