Welcome to IEEE MTT/EDS/SSCS Penang Chapter, the first IEEE chapter founded in Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, Penang, Malaysia.

The MTT/ED/SSCS Penang Chapter is responsible for coordinating IEEE activities for the technical and scientific community in both industry and academia in the northern Malaysia region, and mainly focuses on RF/microwave engineering, electron devices, and solid-state circuits.

Please do not hesitate to contact us, if you have any questions, or you want to be on our announcement mailing list, or you would like to present your technical/scientific topics.

Upcoming Events/Annoucement

Distinguished Lecture

Distinguished Lecture by Professor Jan Van der Spiegel, University of Pennsylvania, USA.

Topic: Bio-inspired Polarization Imaging – making the invisible visible

Abstract: The talk will discuss our recent work on CMOS vision sensors for polarization imaging. We will review briefly the concepts of polarization and how it is used by various species in nature to enhance their vision or to aid with navigation and communication. Inspired by the biology we have used polarization for a variety of applications to detect features that are hard to see or even invisible to the human eye. Motivated by the potential advantages of polarization imaging, we have developed a novel CMOS imager that combines the pixel array with micro-polarizers. The imager consists of 1.5T pixels and operates in the current-mode.

Speaker's Biography:

Jan Van der Spiegel is a professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering and the director of the Center for Sensor Technologies at the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests are in mixed-mode VLSI design, biologically based vision sensors and, micro-sensor technology.

Dr. Van der Spiegel is a Fellow of the IEEE (2002) and the recipient of the IEEE Educational Activities Board Major Educational Innovation Award (2007), the IEEE Third Millennium Medal (2000), the UPS Foundation Distinguished Education Chair and the Bicentennial Class of 1940 Term Chair.

He was the editor for Sensor and Actuators for N&S America from 1983 to 2003.

He served as the program chair of the 2007 International Solid-State Circuit Conference (ISSCC). He has also been active in the IEEE Solid-State Circuit Society where he is the Chapters Chairs coordinator. Under his leadership the number of SSCS Chapters has grown from 1 to over 70 worldwide.

Dr. Van der Spiegel received his MS and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Leuven, Belgium.
