IEEE  WA Section/Chapters Student Paper Competition

Judging Criteria for Undergraduate Papers

Technical Merit

1. Problem Statement   out of 10
How well is the background of the problem described? Are the References adequate and appropriate? Is there a clear statement of the problem to be solved?
2. Significance   out of 10
How well has the author argued the (theoretical or practical) significance of the problem?
3. Contribution and Originality   out of 10
Has the author compared the proposed solution of the stated problem with the existing solution(s), if any? Is the proposed algorithm/method/design significantly faster, more accurate, more efficient, lower cost, more stable, etc.? Alternatively, how well has the paper filled the stated gap in the existing knowledge or engineering tool kit? Is the approach used to derive the solution original or innovative? Does it lead to the development of new theories, design methods, experimental or measurement techniques?
4. Solution Method   out of 10
Is the derivation of the solution sound and rigorous? Are all steps supported either by the references, or by direct proofs in the paper, or by suitably conducted tests?
5. Discussion   out of 10
Are the results supported by theoretical analysis, and/or appropriate simulation or experimental studies? Do they validate the proposed solution? Do they highlight the key features of the solution? Has the author provided a critical assessment of his/her own work and other people's work?

Presentation

6. Spelling and Grammar   out of 10
Are there any spelling mistakes and grammatical errors?
7. Readability   out of 10
Does the text read well? If the paper contains an algorithm, is it presented in an easily understandable form?
8. Tables and Figures   out of 10
Are the tables and figures clearly labeled and easy to understand? Are the table and figure captions helpful?
9. Organisation and Layout   out of 10
Does the layout of the paper conform to any acceptable standards for scientific papers? Is there an abstract? References? Is the body of the paper divided into sections and sub-sections with meaningful section and sub-section headings?
10. Development of Argument   out of 10
Are the arguments in the paper developed in a logical and systematic manner?

Total

Does the paper contain any technical errors? (That is, errors that are fundamental in nature which lead to an erroneous conclusion.)
