People don’t choose to study Engineering for fun (well, most people), they choose it as a challenging career that they will grow with and be supported by. So… what is your plan? Where do you want to go with Engineering, and what priority will your career take in your life?

"I do see building a career as very important, but I don't want to compromise on ethics or kill myself (working unreasonably long hours, not being able to look after myself and not having time for anything else) while doing it."

You should plan for where you want to be in 2, 5, 10 years, and the steps that you’ll need to take to get there. Developing your career can be seen to have two sides – professional development (improving yourself) and managing your employment.
