Executive Reports
Section Chair (Jeffrey Friedhoffer)
- Shahbaz Raza is a candidate for senior member. Senior members in the section have volunteered to assist in recommendation of candidacy
- Five members from Essex Corporation wish to be upgraded to senior member
- Sent out feelers to Student Chapter Advisers but response is less than resounding. Visit to Loyola College indicated small number of students in EE
- GOLD program has a volunteer in Wole Akpose who is getting a note sent out to Graduates Of the Last Decade.
- IEEE data access program available to Chairs and Officers to compile member lists.
Treasurer (Boris Gramatikov)
- IEEE rebate based on number of members and number of chapters that held more than 2 meetings in the year.
- Tom Lynch is co-signatory of our main account.
- Have $22,430.08 in main account and $13,846.08 in concentration account.
- Received $250 from UM and they are interested in more advertising.
- Question was asked about using one existing account for checking.
Secretary (Brian Sequeira)
Membership Development (Vil Arafiles)
- Slightly ahead of schedule in getting SMs. 13 SMs so far of which 7 are from PES.
- Shelly Woodcock looking for EE in Pharmaceutical Industry.
- Moved to post job opening on Section website at no cost. Motion seconded by Brian Sequeira and passed unanimously.
Student Activities (Neville Jacobs)
- The Robot Challenge for 2003 went well, and 30 teams participated (vs 33 in 2002, 37 in 2001, and 29 in 2000). No speed records were broken, but the overall quality and creativity of the written reports and the Robots were about the best we have ever seen. We had the largest number of 4-legged and automated robot participants. Eight (8) teams completed the course: about the same rate as in the previous 3 years. C. Milton Wright HS won the 2-legged challenge, and Beth Tfiloh won the 4-legged challenge.
- We ended up with barely enough judges and had to shuffle them between Track and Oral presentations more so than in previous years.
- We finished earlier on Saturday than in previous years because of better organization. Teams did not have to wait at all as there were brought smoothly through the registration, track and oral presentations.
- The Sunday event was conducted in the Fireplace room and it was quite crowded. It would be preferable if we could use the Museum for both days.
- As usual a few judging dilemmas arose, but there were minor and will have been discussed at the Robot Committee meeting. The level of satisfaction for the vast majority of the teams was very high, and they all looked forward to reading the results on the web page.
- Gary Wiebolt and his photographers are to be congratulated for getting pictures posted on the web site each evening, and the final results on Sunday night.
- We received checks from Charles Flowers HS ($383 + $285 = $668), Spirit of Faith ($60, still owe $70), IEEE Lehigh Section ($216), IEEE Schenectady Section ($54.30), IEEE Alamogordo Section ($136.90), Ronald Aloysius ($69) for a total receipt of $1204.20
- Exhibited at PES Student dinner with good response from students and mentors alike.
- Expenses (copy furnished to Treasurer) this month is $155.53. Would appreciate a check for this amount.
WIE (Tina Kohler)
Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs)
Abstract:
Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) represent an important key technology for the US Navy. Captain John Lambert will present topics that first show the "big" picture of UUV development. This will include the Submarine Technology (SUBTECH) Development Process and the UUV Master Plan. All topics discussed will trace the development of warfighter UUV systems and relate them to Naval and Submarine Force warfighting capabilities.
He will discuss some important UUV programs including: Long-term Mine Reconnaissance System (LMRS) and the LMRS System Performance Upgrades, that sets the stage for the Mission Reconfigurable UUV (MRUUV).
MRUUV represents an exciting new way to think about UUVs. Instead of mission specific designs, the MRUUV will be able to perform a wide variety of missions through the use of innovative reconfigurable vehicle system designs. Please join us for this fascinating and informative presentation.
