Jeff Friedhoffer chaired the meeting, which was called to order at 6:30 pm.

 

Jeff made a reminder: there is a service called E-Notice (accessible from the IEEE main page) which allows forwarding text to society members locally.

 

Executive Reports

Section Chair (Jeffrey Friedhoffer):  Chapter Chairs’ Dinner will be on May 12, 2004.

 

Dick Schafer (Awards & Recognition): People should sign up for the Chapter Chairs’ Dinner a.s.a.p.  Preparations go as planned, but the number of attendees is needed.

·        Presented a Quarterly report. As of March 20, 2004, the balance with SunTrust was $6,731.51

·        Experiences difficulties in establishing contact to IEEE Financial Officer Sameer Qureshi regarding the Concentration Banking account.

 

Professional Activities (Carole Carey)

·        At the leadership Symposium in Atlanta, IEEE-USA decided on a Fly-In program, intended to give IEEE members the opportunity to come to Washington DC to discuss careers and offshoring with members of Congress. ·        Paratek Microwave in Columbia, MD, is seeking a Director of Engineering; Jeff: will include in the web job listing for a limited period of time

 

·        National Engineers Week Future City Competition for 7th and 8th grade students on futuristic concepts and practical science applications has been announced:

Old Business and Review of Action Items

 

1) Jeff Friedhoffer:  Consultants Network – Dave Pfaltzgraff is organizing a Consultants group for networking in the Baltimore region, similar to the NSAC which is active in the DC area. A Baltimore region network could function efficiently for industrial professionals. Dave will set up an affinity group, and is expected to fill the necessary forms and obtain the endorsing signatures. A kick-off meeting will take place in the coming 2 weeks.

 

 

Reports from IEEE Executives

2) In 2007 the ComSoc meeting will be held in Washington DC. Seed money will be needed – probably $5,000 from each Section in the Region.  John Dentler offered help with software/spreadsheets for accounting.

3) The Region is setting up a job board.

The Northern Virginia Section is interested in joint work with the Baltimore Section. 

 

 

Report Highlights from Directors and Chapter Chairs

 

Newsletter (Ron Aloysius)

·        The May issue is in preparation.

·        Contributions to the Newsletter on issues of common interest are welcome.

·        Upcoming centennials appealing to engineers may be considered

Jeff: A general Section meeting on the last issue may be considered. Topics like Brian Greene’s String Theory would be of interest. He encouraged Ron to further explore this.

Events:

·        UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) talk was given by Dr. Jay Willmoff on BAE Aerospace, Inc. on April 8th.   Included flight hardware and videos of mini-UAV technology.

·        Administrative meeting will be held on Thursday night, April 22 with incoming student chapter officers.

 

EMB (David Sherman) 

·        Chapter had on March 25 an interesting meeting “The Biomedical Engineer and Patient Safety: Looking Beyond Device Designwith Mark E. Bruley, Vice President, Accident and Forensic Investigation, ECRI, Plymouth Meeting, PA

·        A meeting on FDA Engineering is being planned at the HEM in May

 

 

APS/MTT (Doug Kremer): planning upcoming meetings – first one on May 4 with EMC on “EMI/EMC Computational Modeling for Real-World Engineering Problems”.
