The Baltimore Power & Energy Society hosted a technical discussion on synchronized phasor measurements (synchrophasors), which provide real-time measurement of electrical quantities from across a power system. Attendees learned about synchrophasor applications and basic system building blocks from Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL), an industry leader in turnkey synchrophasor solutions.
Battery Energy Storage Systems Webinar

The prime function of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is to provide spinning reserve in the event of power plant or transmission line equipment failure. For these systems rechargeable batteries are used to store electricity in the form of chemical energy. Pat Hayes from ABB’s Battery Energy Storage System group provided an overview of their technology and its applications.

Presenter Rodney Oddoye was the Senior Engineer on the Bowie Electric Reliability Action Plan, and was centrally involved in the development and implementation of BGE’s $36M project to improve reliability in Bowie.

Presenter Jim Perry is the Plant General Manager at Constellation Energy’s H. A. Wagner Station. Jim has the overall responsibility for the operation of a 1,000 MW power generating facility consisting of five separate coal, oil, and gas fired units.

The Power & Energy Society and the Industry Applications Society of Baltimore hosted Dr. Chuck Merritt, Project Controls Manager for UniStar Nuclear Energy. Attendees learned about the current state of the nuclear power industry and where it's headed in the future. Dr. Merritt presented the role of nuclear power generation in the US energy portfolio, the policies and regulations surrounding "new nuclear", and the progress of the Calvert Cliffs Unit 3 project.

IEEE Baltimore Power & Energy Society again hosted the annual Engineers' Week Dinner on February 19th, during National Engineers Week. The evening featured guest speaker Mr. Guillermo Warley, Vice President of Product Development for Schonstedt Instruments Company and member of Engineers Without Borders. Neville Jacobs provided a demonstration of the IEEE Robot Challenge and the Woodlawn High School FIRST Robotics Team was on hand to demonstrate their award winning robot. The event was a great success and was attended by 50 students, teachers and engineering professionals.

The Power and Energy Society of Baltimore hosted its final technical development meeting of the year featuring Chuck Newton, President of Newton-Evans Research Company, Inc., providing an overview of smart grid developments from a researcher’s viewpoint.
Entitled “The Smart Grid: What, Why, When and How”, the presentation is timely given today’s environment with electric power utilities undertaking several major T&D infrastructure and automation upgrade projects simultaneously. Smart Grid developments encompass control systems upgrades, IT applications linkage with outage management, SCADA, GIS and CIS; substation automation and integration; digital protection and control; advanced metering infrastructure and AMR; distribution automation and communications infrastructure upgrades.
Elements of advanced technology programs from EPRI and major suppliers, regulatory drivers in the form of renewable portfolio standards, and new demand response programs along with DSM initiatives all need to be taken into consideration in the development of a cohesive approach to the “smart grid” of the 21st century.

"Broadband over Power Lines (BPL): Enabling the 21st Century Smart Grid"
IEEE Baltimore Power Engineering Society (PES) held its first Technical Meeting of the year on March 14, 2007. The presenter was Mr. Brian J. Deaver, Sr. P.E., Product Manager of Smart Grid Services for CURRENT, the leading U.S.-based provider of Broadband over Power Line Solutions and Services.
Broadband over Power Line (BPL) is much more than a technical solution for providing high speed consumer internet service over power lines. BPL enabled networks allow utilities to cost effectively implement multiple Smart Grid Services, including automated meter reading, distribution network monitoring and automated outage detection and restoration, among others. These services enable utilities to provide increased reliability, efficiency and security of energy services to their customers, while offering economic and societal benefits as well. The presenter introduced BPL technology, and provided an overview of a large scale deployment utilizing BPL network solutions.

The Baltimore Chapter of the Power Engineering Society hosted over forty Engineering Professionals and local high school students at the Annual Engineers Week Dinner Meeting! This year’s dinner meeting began with the bestowal of the 2006 Outstanding Engineer Award on PES Member Drew Bonthron, and featured a presentation on the 2007 Robot Challenge from Jay Gammerman, representative of the Baltimore Section of the IEEE, and a keynote speech from Darryl Stokes, PES Member and Manager of Substation & Distribution Design at BGE.

"Effect of Future Technical and Regulatory Developments on Transmission Systems"
IEEE Baltimore Power Engineering Society (PES) held its third Technical Meeting of the year on December 6, 2006. The meeting was held at Baltimore Gas & Electric's Rutherford Business Complex-South location, 7225 Windsor Blvd, Baltimore, MD 21224. The presenter was Mr. Jack Casazza, an IEEE Distinguish Lecturer and President of the American Education Institute. The American Education Institute is a not-for-profit organization founded by Mr. Casazza in 1994 dedicated to providing the education needed in setting electric power policy. The presentation was on the "Effect of Future Technical and Regulatory Developments on (Electric) Transmission Systems". The meeting was attended by approximately forty attendees, including both members and non-members of PES. Mr. Casazza delivered a very entertaining and informative presentation that enlightening for all who were present.

The First Annual Gala was a blast!
The First Annual Baltimore Power Engineering Society Gala was a huge success. The event was attended by 68 members and friends of the PES. Sophisticatedly adorned in semiformal attire, everyone was greeted by the elegant atmosphere provided by the Grey Rock Mansion in Pikesville, Maryland. The evening kicked off with a wine tasting event hosted by Boordy Vineyard and ended with an excellent talk on “The State of the Engineer” by our distinguished speaker, Dr. Warren DeVries - Dean of the School of Engineering and Information Technology at UMBC.
The event would not have been such a success without the support of the seven corporate sponsors: ABB, Baltimore Gas & Electric, Constellation Energy, General Electric, JB Sales, KCI, and Martini & Associates. These sponsors made it possible for several young professional engineers to attend the event for free, including members of IEEE Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD). The event is intended recur annually and will be held again in the Fall of 2007.

"Achieving and Sustaining Enterprise Benefits of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)"
The October 11, 2006 Baltimore PES Technical Meeting was attended by 36 IEEE and non-IEEE members. The presentation was made by Hahn Tram of Enspiria Solutions. Hahn Tram is a senior member of IEEE and serves on the Power System Planning & Implementation Committee. Enspiria Solutions provides solutions for utilities, the public sector and local governments.

"Grid Optimization: Transmission Analysis from a Power Marketer's Perspective"
The July 2006 PES Technical Meeting on Grid Optimization was a huge success. A total of 52 persons attended the meeting, with an almost 50/50 split between IEEE and non-IEEE members. Attendees included IEEE members from various local companies and organizations involved in power engineering.
