>Date: June 3, 2003. > >IEEE_BALTIMORE GOLD NEWSLETTER SECOND IEEE GOLD, BALTIMORE AFFINITY GROUP NEWSLETTER 1. Meeting Schedules for the Rest of the year 2.WHAT GOLD IS GOLD stands for Graduate of Last Decade, but those who conceived of the Acronym couldn't have thought of a better one. GOLD, for centuries was the chief of metal (remember the alchemist's search from GOLD from other metals?). The metal was not just revered for its name, but its glistering and non-rusting nature made it a proud repository of wealth. Up till today, money is still tied to GOLD all over the world and more often than not, GOLD is considered a stable benchmark for money. So should we see ourselves, not just the future of the Engineering profession but the benchmark for performance and excellence today at Work and in all that we do. We should be GOLD and aim for excellence. There are currently many IEEE GOLD chapters all around the world from Boston to India, bringing young, recently graduated EE professionals together in any form the group believes will contribute to their career and bring social benefits to the members and oftentimes to the society. Also, GOLD chapters are not left alone. Assistance in various forms is available from the parent section, various Societies in the Section to which the GOLD chapter belongs as well as from the Institute. 4. Some Resources for Engineers We have various needs as Electrical Engineers but we would try to highlight some of these needs and various resources within and outside the IEEE to help address them. Some topics we will consider will include financial security; career stability; and hopefully social fulfillment. This column will be dedicated to information regarding these. 5. Making the Best Use of your Membership. Membership of the IEEE has several benefits, including access to a large repository of Technical documentation, great networking resources, a group financial package, financial advantage, rebate on travels and many others, but of a greater advantage is membership of the societies within IEEE. There are currently more several societies within the IEEE, each focused on technical or even social issues that affect Engineers today. Outside the Student membership group, the GOLD and the Women in engineering group are technical groups like the Power Society, Communication Society and Computer Society. These and many other Societies play leading roles in the Technological advancement that continues to dictate the pace of not just our general lives, but also the course of our careers as Electrical (Electronic or Computer or Telecommunication) Engineers. Memberships of one or more of these Societies hold some major benefit in the form of 1. Early access to information on the latest technology and research 2. Opportunity to contribute and participate in developing standards that will shape the technologies of tomorrow 3. Additional Exposure to high quality journals and often times, the challenge to author too. 4. The close fellowship with Society members and opportunity to recruit a mentor whose path closely matches what we may wish or aspire for and many more. The benefits are there and it is our duty to seek them out and utilize them.
