News
I just returned from the Region 2 meeting in Philadelphia.
I am proud to report that the Dayton section has the second highest
percentage of senior members in all of Region 2! Our Senior Membership
Drive Breakfasts are the model that other sections are using to increase
senior membership. However, we are estimated to have 300 additional
members who are eligible for the senior member upgrade. It isn’t as
difficult as you might think! Check out www.ieee.org/organizations/rab/md/smprogram.html
for more information. We are only one percentage point behind the Erie
section; twenty new senior members could push us into first place. I
will be submitting my application this month; I challenge any of you
who missed our Breakfast to do the same! - Roger Claypoole
Life Members News
The ranks of Life Members have been swelling in recent
years. This is reflective of a natural rise resulting from the continued,
long-term growth of the IEEE membership population and ever increasing
life spans. To achieve Life Member status, a member needs to be at least
65 years old, and have a combined age and years of IEEE membership equal
to or greater than 100 (e.g., 68 years old with 32 years of active membership).
Once a member reaches Life member status, their IEEE dues and Regional
assessments are waived. This year, however, Life Members are also being
required to return their renewal notices in order to keep their membership
active. Life Members who do not respond by returning their renewal forms
will have their memberships deactivated as of the end of February. Regions,
Sections, and Chapters are encouraged to use their newsletters and other
communication vehicles to remind their Life Members of this change in
policy. This will ensure continued services for this important constituency.
Fellows News
New IEEE Fellow in Dayton
Dr. Brian Michael Kent
US Air Force Research Laboratory Wright-Patterson AFB,
OH For leadership in the development and application of radar cross
section measurement technologies
Dan Repperger,
Fellow of IEEE, wins American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering
fellow award
Daniel Repperger, electronics engineer in the Air Force Research Laboratory
Human Effectiveness Directorate here, recently won the American Institute
for Medical and Biological Engineering fellow award for rehabilitation
engineering.
The nomination was based on studies involving Air Force technology
designed to improve the quality of life for veterans who need assistance
with activities of daily living.
Two previous, and one ongoing Department of Veterans Affairs studies,
focused on activities such as eating, writing, using a computer, and
other tasks most people take for granted. The first VA effort used robotic
devices to help people move their hands and arms in a smooth, consistent
fashion. People with certain disabilities have difficulty in controlling
their arms and legs in performing tasks.
The second VA initiative involved the development of electrical devices
called transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation that helped reduce
pain in the lower back.
The current VA effort involves a joint study between the University
of Pittsburgh and patients at the VA center in Pittsburgh, Pa. Patients
suffering from unsteady hand motions are being evaluated so that physicians
learn how to reduce this tremor.
New devices — personal digital assistant devices — are being used to
record the data for the study. “These devices demonstrate how technology
developed within the Air Force can be used in the private sector, especially
for improving the quality of lives for Air Force veterans,” said Repperger.
The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering is a
nonprofit organization that serves to promote the national interest
in science, engineering and education and to recognize individual and
group achievements and contributions to the field of medical and biological
engineering.
Member-Get-A-Member (MGM)
Student-Get-A-Student (SGS)
When you experience something good, you want to share it with others.
It’s the natural thing to do. That’s why IEEE conducts Member-Get-a-Member
(MGM) and Student–Get–a-Student (SGS) campaigns. Most members know how
beneficial IEEE membership is in their professional lives and what it
has meant to their technical and career development. Beginning 1 September
2002 and running through the 2003 IEEE dues year that ends on 15 August
2003, the IEEE will conduct the MGM and SGS campaigns to encourage members
to recruit their colleagues or fellow students to become IEEE members.
In return for their efforts, a small financial “thank you” will be awarded
that can be used as a credit towards 2004 IEEE or Technical Society
membership dues or the purchase of IEEE services and products. For more
details check http://www.ieee.org/organizations/rab/md/mgm.html

IEEE Personal Email Alias Service with free
virus scanning
A members-only benefit, the IEEE email alias service delivers:
Clarity - An IEEE alias is easy to acquire, remember
and update online
Constancy - You’re alias stays @ieee.org even when your
email address changes
Convergence - You’ll identify yourself to other IEEE members
Connectivity - Email messages are automatically forwarded
to your real Internet address
Comfort - Attachments to emails sent to your alias will
automatically be scanned for viruses
Free Virus Scanning Our virus-scanning feature helps prevent
you from receiving viruses in the first place.
Attachments within your e-mail that are sent to your IEEE
email alias will be scanned for viruses. If a virus is found, the attachment
will be be deleted. An alert is then sent to both the sender and recipient.
While the IEEE cannot guarantee that every virus will be found, the
virus scanning software is updated daily with a current virus recognition
file.
A service like this typically costs $30 per year, but
as an IEEE member, it is yours FREE of charge.
