Next Meeting Every
Thurs
These groups meet every Thursday from 12:00-12:50 at AFIT,
Bldg. 640, Room 265. IEEE members and non-IEEE members welcome.
“Bring Your Own Lunch” The meeting lasts under an hour and guarantees
that you’ll be back to work on time. The meeting starts in working
group format with each attendee relating current research/study
progress, problems, failures, solution etc. Following that,
there is a 15 minute featured speaker. It's also a good way
to network with other Government engineers. If you have any
questions, please contact: Prof. Andrew J. Terzuoli, Jr. Air
Force Inst of Technology (AFIT) Office: 1-937-255-3636 x 4717
Pager: 1-888-988-2440 (Toll Free) Vmail: 1-937-239-4979 Private
Fax: 1-513-860-3228 Local email: Andrew.Terzuoli@afit.edu
Global email: a.j.terzuoli@ieee.org
DSN: 785-3636 x 4717
NOTE: FOR NON-GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES &
CONTACTORS - please SEND A FAX TO “IEEE THURSDAY MEETING COORDINATOR”
at (937) 656-4055 or (937) 904-8065, 24 hours in advance so
that a base pass can be made out for you and left at the Visitor
Center in Area B off of Springfield Street gate number 1B.
You will need some kind of I.D. to pick up your pass.
Bldg. 640 is located at the intersection of Loop Rd. and 11th/12th
Streets, near the AFRL twin towers building (Bldg 620).
Parking is in front or rear of Bldg. 640 (parking in the rear
is more plentiful). Allow an extra 15-20 minutes to go
through the visitor center.
If you have any questions, please contact

Signal Processing Society
Distinguished Speaker Series
The Signal Processing Society is pleased to announce the start
of our new distinguished speaker series. The goal of this
series is to attract experts on a variety of cutting-edge signal
processing technologies of interest to our local chapter.
Also, if you have any recommendations or requests for future
speakers (or would like to be a guest speaker yourself!), please
send me your ideas.
CS
Meeting: Tuesday, Mar 18 at
11:30 AM
Title: Enemy behavior
identification in
on-line sensor streams
Please note: Attendees limited to U.S.
citizens (this month only)
When: Tuesday, March 18 11:30-12:30
Where: Lockheed Martin STS (Simulation, Training, and
Support) 3000 Presidential Drive, Suite 215 (2nd floor) Fairborn,
OH
RSVP: Dave Perez, david.perez.ctr@wapfb.mil
or (937)257-4318
Presenter: Dr. Richard R. Brooks, Associate
Professor, Holcombe Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering,
Clemson University Clemson, SC
Abstract: We consider the problem of identifying
an adversary's higher level behaviors in distributed sensor
streams of on-line sensor data. We specifically address the
level 2 (situation assessment) and level 3 (threat assessment)
data fusion problems in the Joint Directors of Laboratories
(JDL) heirarchy. We use symbolic features data output from the
level 1 (object assessment) fusion level. Hidden Markov Models
(HMM) are a computational tool widely used for applications
like voice recognition. Unfortunately HMM design typically relies
on the existence of a priori information. We extend the e-machine
approach developed by Dr. Crutchfield at the Santa Fe institute
in order to infer HMM behavior detection models directly from
symbolic data streams. Our extension allows detection routines
to be inferred directly from data samples without any a priori
information. We also note that current HMM methods detect behaviors
using a maximum likelihood approach, which has many drawbacks.
One major drawback is that the maximum likelihood approach ignores
the number of data samples processed. We present a new approach
that uses confidence intervals to determine the presence of
behaviors in sensor data streams. Verification of our approach
uses the Department of Defense One SAF test bed war game tool
for data verification.

High-Throughput Computing
for Massive Data Sets Using Stream-based Data Pipelines and
Hybrid Computing Architectures
Speaker: Mr. Scott Lightner, Chief Architect, Qbase
Abstract: Mr. Scott Lightner, Chief Architect
from Qbase Inc., will present a modern approach to High-Throughput
Computing (HTC) for massive data sets. The sizes of today's
data sets are growing at an exponential rate. Medical imagery,
aerial sensor data and nationwide collections of structured
data, are all growing in size while advances in data analytics
algorithms are becoming more complex and computationally expensive.
Advances in commodity computer technology (CPU's, memory and
disk drives) are not keeping pace with today's processing needs.
The presentation will focus on HTC solutions being developed
at Qbase which combine cluster computing, hybrid computing architectures,
parallel file storage and high-speed networks with stream-based
data pipeline software and self-aware systems management software
to provide an adaptable, fault-tolerant platform for performing
advanced analytics on massive data sets.
Bring a lunch if you wish.
Free for IEEE
& ACM members.

LEOS MEETING
What
have you missed?
The Ohio Optics Consortium
(OOC) is a network of optical professionals that is focused
on forging new partnerships and fostering professional development
to expand optical technology in Ohio.
Andrew Sarangon, a new faculty
within the Electro-Optics Dept. at UD, is looking for interested
members and volunteers from the Dayton Section to form a LEOS
chapter. Anyone interested please call Andrew
at 229-3190. The Field of Interest of LEOS is lasers,
optical devices, optical fibers, and associated lightwave technology
and their applications in systems and subsystems in which quantum
electronic devices are key elements. The society is concerned
with the research, development, design, manufacture, and applications.
