The DC/NoVA Chapter of the IEEE-EDS is pleased to co-sponsor The Atlantic Nano Forum and announces the next event:

Innovative Technologies II

presented by the three renowned nano-technologists:

Dr. Steve Wilson

Executive VP, Luna Innovations

And

Dr. Vinayak Dravid

Director, Atomic and Nanoscale Characterization Experimental Center (NUANCE), Northwestern University

And

Dr. Anita Goel

Founder and CEO of Nanobiosym

Dr. Steven Wilson will discuss emerging applications in fullerenes and nanotubes.  Dr. Vinayak Dravid will discuss emerging smart bio-chem nanosensors - nano-dots to nano cantilevers.  And Dr. Anita Goel will discuss breakthrough nanoscale technologies to detect, amplify and identify trace amounts of biowarfare agents.

Dr. Stephen R. Wilson is the Executive Vice President for the newly-formed Nanomaterials Division of Luna Innovations in Danville, VA. Dr. Wilson is one of the world's leading fullerene and nanotube chemists and successful entrepreneurs and innovators. A founder and former Chief Scientific Officer with Houston-based C Sixty Inc., a bio-nano technology company focusing on medical uses of fullerene antioxidants, he has authored over 200 patents and publications in nanotechnology, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and biotechnology.

Recent years have witnessed a remarkable explosion in synthesis, characterization and properties of novel functional nanostructures. While intricate, precise and integrated systems approaches for such nanostructures at nanoscale precision and accuracy are still evolving, sufficient progress has been made to demonstrate proof-of concept devices based on functional nanostructures. Going beyond mere miniaturization, emerging nanoscale bio-chem sensors exhibit intriguing but potentially useful performance, with significant implications for on-site. real-time, remotely addressable, multiplexed and cost effective sensor systems. Dr. Dravid received a Btech degree in Metallurgy from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and in 1990 received his PhD, Materials Science and Engineering from Lehigh University.

Nanobiosym focuses on exploiting emerging nanotechnologies to provide innovative solutions to problems in the biotech and biomedical industry. Their current efforts include the development of prototypes for advanced diagnostic devices. Nanobiosym also developed the breakthrough nanoscale technologies to detect, amplify, and identify trace amounts of biowarfare agents. Dr. Goel completed her Ph.D. in Physics at Harvard University and her MD is with the Division of Health Sciences and Technology at MIT and Harvard Medical School. She has been pursuing research and emerging technologies at the cutting interface of physics, biomedicine and nanotechnology.

This event will take place on Thursday October 28, 2004, 4:00-7:00 PM, at Burns, Doane, Swecker & Mathis, L.L.P. Suite 500, 1737 King Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.  Attendance is free, and refreshments will be served; social period and registration is 4:00-4:25 PM, and the presentations will start at 4:30 PM.

Space is limited because the events of The Atlantic Nano Forum are popular.

Therefore, please RSVP by September 24, 2004 to nano@burnsdoane.com, and direct questions to Cynthia Johnson at (703) 838-6529 or cynthiaj@burnsdoane.com.
