Foliage Penetration Synthetic Aperture Radar (FOPEN SAR) operates in the VHF and UHF bands. The operation of such a radar is considerably different from microwave SARs, due to the long wavelengths and wide integration angles that are utilized. FOPEN SAR technology allows vehicles and other targets to be observed under tree cover. The technology also has other uses, such as determining the bare earth topography, the tree stem spacing and the canopy density. This talk will discuss a dual-band system currently being developed by the Government.
