The IEEE Computer Society is conducting virtual meetings on Second Life (SL). We don't yet have a technical meeting schedule as we are getting familiar with the environment and discussing topics. The virtual meetings will eliminate travel and add convenience. I have verified that SL will work on a laptop over an 802.11g connection (from a hotel room or airport). In advance of the anticipated meeting schedule, I ecourage you to find a member of our group online. We are currently attracting members to participate in our virtual meetings. We expect to engage speakers from across the globe and have found interest across the country. Several speakers have expressed interest. We are meeting in the virtual space informally at this time. Please drop in and see if one of us is online and join us to discuss plans at 7PM on 14 November. Meeting notices are provided in second life to group members. If you're not familiar with SL, consider that your avatar will be in a meeting with avatars representing other members in our facility that you view from your computer screen. You can communicate with the group by voice and message chat. You can also conduct private communications while in SL by instant message (IM). We will prefer presentations use voice. You'll need to get a headset - a microphone/speaker will create annoying echo. Test voice before the meeting. Ask for help. We have a presentation method (power point slide show) for technical meetings and will continue with familiarization and planning meetings. I am suggesting technical topics that include software defined radios, modeling and simulation and, of course, virtual technology for current interest. We can reach anywhere on the globe for presenters. We are not limited to any number of meetings or schedule of additional topics and are looking for ideas. Here are some background links. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfJgEYzgtnE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veUimLucXC8&feature=channel_page&hd=1 First step is to register on www.secondlife.com. Select a name and an avatar. Next step is to join our goup, "IEEE computer Society", to find us. Announcements on SL will be sent to the group within SL. If an email address if provided at registration, the announcments will be forwarded to the email if not on SL to receive it. We will ultimately meet at one of IEEE Islands in one of the meeting facilities. We will provide a "landmark" to easily find the location. Pictured below is our Second Life mentor, Vema Paine, who graciously offered to accellerate your familiarization. You can use SEARCH to find Velma and send an IM. |

A goal of the chapter is to address the breadth and depth of our society interests. We hope to provide presentations that will hit home of expand horizons. First, we consider the wid range of professional affiliations of our members. Please let me know if I missed any. Government, SETA, FFRDC/labs, consultants System/Enterprise/Process Architects Manufacturing, Professional Services, System/Product Developers, Sales/Support Faculty, Students
Categories of interests include the following. Again let me know if I haven’t covered an area of interest. Software Quality, Architecture (including SOA), Process and Process Improvement Agile programming, reliable systems, data management and data sharing Algorithm development, modeling and simulation Systems Engineering, Standards Information Assurance, Information Technology Networking, SW&FW, embedded/RT Applications Science and Technology, Innovation Professional and Society interests
On venues, I hope you noticed that we have a standard monthly meeting at MITRE (and other VTC sites) for which we are teaming with the Association for Software Quality and Software Special Interest Group. We are looking to add VTC sites to add convenience to meeting attendance. If you register for dial-in, our MITRE host will provide a phoned number and email the briefing material. I’ve plugging in when out of the area. We are looking for members to suggest venues for special events or additional regular meetings. We can find companies and universities to present projects, trends and technology. We try to avoid sales pitches but the reality of the motivation cannot be entirely eliminated. We are also looking to pioneer web cast meeting in our area to mitigate travelling. We are also looking at other IEEE virtual resources to deliver content. We have a long queue of potential topics and speakers but we are limited by venue opportunity. A critical mass of volunteers is needed to sponsor a conference of other major event. Since computers are ubiquitous in applications, we cosponsor events with other IEEE societies. We collaborate with other societies like ACM and are reaching out to other organizations. Supporting events at student chapters is a priority. I’ll conclude with a pitch to join our chapter executive committee to help manage our goals and execution. |

We are looking forward to engaging the IEEE W/NV computer society chapter membership. We are teaming with the ASQ, SSIG and ACM societies to reach more members at monthly meetings. We are reaching out to local colleges and universities, other IEEE societies, INCOSE and IASA, and to Baltimore, West Virginia and Central Pennsylvania. We enjoy a technically diverse and deep set of interests that overlap with the interests of many applications areas. We appreciate feedback and will be acting on ideas we receive. |
