The IEEE Computer Society is conducting virtual meetings on Second Life (SL).  We don't yet have a technical meeting schedule as we are getting familiar with the environment and discussing topics.  The virtual meetings will eliminate travel and add convenience.  I have verified that SL will work on a laptop over an 802.11g connection (from a hotel room or airport).   In advance of the anticipated meeting schedule, I ecourage you to find a member of our group online.

We are currently attracting members to participate in our virtual meetings.  We expect to engage speakers from across the globe and have found interest across the country.   Several speakers have expressed interest.

We are meeting in the virtual space informally at this time.  Please drop in and see if one of us is online and join us to discuss plans and attend technical meetings.   We are looking at the first Saturday of the month.   Next meeting is 5 Dec 2009.   Schedule is 1100 EST/1400 SLT for an SL introduction/tutotrial (if needed), 1130 for socializing and sound checks 1200 for the meeting proper.   Meeting notices are provided in second life to group members.

If you're not familiar with SL, consider that your avatar will be in a meeting with avatars representing other members in our facility that you view from your computer screen.   You can communicate with the group by voice and message chat.  You can also conduct private communications while in SL by instant message (IM).  We will prefer presentations use voice.  You'll need to get a headset - a microphone/speaker will create annoying echo.  Test voice before the meeting.  Ask for help.

We have a presentation method (power point slide show) for technical meetings and will continue with familiarization and planning meetings.  I am suggesting technical topics and will discuss these at LinkedIn discussion group, IEEE Virtual.   We can reach anywhere on the globe for presenters.

Here are some background links.

First step is to register on www.secondlife.com.  Select a name and an avatar.   Next step is to join our goup, "IEEE computer Society", to find us.   Announcements on SL will be sent to the group within SL.  If an email address if provided at registration, the announcments will be forwarded to the email if not on SL to receive it.  We will ultimately meet at one of IEEE Islands in one of the meeting facilities.  We will provide a "landmark" to easily find the location.

IEEE Computer Society Meeting

Location: Second Life

Time: 11/14/2009 7pm EST

This was the 2nd Second Life meeting held by the IEEE Computer Society and it was well attended. Many interesting topics were discussed. In the chat, there were many external references that readers may be interested in reading.  Here is a summary of the links that were discussed.  If you would like to have more context to these references, the entire chat session was captured below.

It was observed by all that the first part of the meeting was spend getting voice communication verified by all attendees.  Audio courtesy conventions needed to be explained.  For example, turn mic off if not speaking.  Increasing the volume of people that had soft voices or mic gain was low.  All of this delayed the meeting by about 20 minutes.  In the future, it was suggested that the meetings open up at least 30 minutes ahead of schedule to allow

Action Items:

  1. Coordinate next meeting with Joey Aboma (?).
  2. A LinkedIn group was created – IEEE Virtual. (done)
  3. Engage universities active in SL
  4. Continue to advertise and engage greater audience.
  5. Think about how to promote the opportunities and appeal to IEEE demographics.

Lessons Learned:

  • Conduct of meetings: start with SL intro, as needed; social networking to include sound checks; technical presentation; admin follow up
  • Etiquette: need to capture sound practice for a better experience
  • More on ettiguette:  Suggest we use a titler to display RL names and affiliation during the meeting.  One can be provided.  Intuction are:  accept transfer, right click in inventory and select wear.   Follow intruction to diplay message (type /tab <message> in local chat window).
  • Tag line for virtual technology – collaborative immersion

Following up and Clarification needed.

Virtual roadmap

  • SL enterprise edition
  • Federation
  • security

Application (I was remiss in listing others to pursue.    Would identify audiences)

  • Need to follow up on items mention
  • Web trimmer
  • NOAA sphere (presence on SL)

  • Motorola effort (sounds like motion capture …but need clarification)
  • NUWC effort and POC
  • GUSL (government users of second life?)
  • Military Lands (SLURL provided in chat)

We are looking forward to engaging the IEEE W/NV computer society chapter membership. We are teaming with the ASQ, SSIG and ACM societies to reach more members at monthly meetings. We are reaching out to local colleges and universities, other IEEE societies, INCOSE and IASA, and to Baltimore, West Virginia and Central Pennsylvania. We enjoy a technically diverse and deep set of interests that overlap with the interests of many applications areas.  We appreciate feedback and will be acting on ideas we receive.
