For some years now the Florida West Coast Section (FWCS) has participated in the Lignell Award Outstanding Teacher Recognition Program to recognize and honor outstanding contributions by teachers to pre-college education in Mathematics and Science in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties.

In 2003 the winners were:

Pasco County: Lee Ogden, Centennial Middle School

This program is open to all individuals teaching classes in Mathematics or Science in the public schools during the current school year. We are currently seeking nominations for this year’s awards that will be presented at the Celebrate Engineering 2004 Awards Banquet at the A La Carte Event Pavilion on Dana Shores Drive, Tampa on Friday February 13th, 2004.

There will be one recipient of this award from each of the three counties and the winners will be invited to attend the banquet, with a guest, to be presented with the award and an honorarium. The Speaker will be Dr. Robin Murphy, Director of the Center for Robot-Assisted Search and Rescue at the University of South Florida. The topic of the presentation will be the use of mini-robots in disaster rescue situations such as 9/11 and earthquakes. The presentation will include a video and she will bring one or two robots to demonstrate during the reception.

The emcee will bee Dick Crippen.
